Honeywell SmartLine NCR 80 GHz Radar Level Transmitter

Description

SmartLine NCR 80 GHz non-contact radar level transmitter (SLN700)

The Honeywell SmartLine NCR is the non-contact radar level transmitter of the SmartLine family, sold as the SLN 700 series. It uses 80 GHz frequency-modulated continuous wave (FMCW) radar: the antenna sends a swept signal toward the product, and the frequency difference between the sent and returned signal gives the distance. Nothing touches the product, so there is no probe to coat, bend or wear. Seven Star LLC supplies SmartLine NCR transmitters in Oman and the GCC as an independent supplier in Muscat.

Three models cover different jobs: SLN700L-82 for corrosive liquids with flanged antennas, SLN700L-83 for liquids in small vessels with threaded antennas, and SLN700S-87 for dusty bulk solids in silos.

How SmartLine NCR measures level without contact

The 80 GHz transmitter sweeps its frequency continuously and compares the outgoing wave with the reflection. A fast Fourier transform on the frequency difference gives a precise distance, and the transmitter converts it to level, volume or distance. Because the wavelength is short, the beam is narrow, the blind zone is small and the transmitter can sit in a narrow nozzle or a small vessel. Honeywell states that the reading is immune to changes in temperature, pressure, conductivity and density, and that false echo suppression is available for tanks with internal obstacles.

The device needs a dielectric constant of at least 1.4. Beam angles from the datasheet are 6 degrees for DN50 and 3 degrees for DN80 lens antennas on the SLN700L-82, 14, 6 and 3 degrees for the 3/4, 1 1/2 and 3 inch versions of the SLN700L-83, and 4 degrees on the DN80 lens of the SLN700S-87.

SmartLine NCR in the SmartLine system and related parts

The SLN 700 shares the SmartLine modular approach, so electronics modules and the display can be exchanged without losing performance, and the unit is tested with Experion PKS and managed with FDM or FDM Express. The advanced display shows large PV and echo stem plots of distance to product, and supports English and Chinese. Configuration is by HART handheld, DTM or the four keys on the display.

If the product has a very low dielectric constant, is turbulent or is contacting a probe, the SmartLine GWR (SLG720 and SLG726) is the alternative. The SMV800 and STT-series transmitters handle flow and temperature points in the same plant.

SmartLine NCR selection and ordering checklist

  • Product type: liquid (L-82 or L-83) or bulk solid (S-87), with the dielectric constant of the product.
  • Measuring range from the antenna end to the lowest level, and the blocking zone at the top.
  • Process connection: flange size and rating for L-82 and S-87, or thread type (G or NPT) and size for L-83.
  • Antenna version and radiator, set by process temperature (150 °C or 200 °C) and pressure.
  • Seal material (FKM or FFKM), housing and cable entry.
  • Approval required (IECEx, ATEX, CSA/CSA-US, InMETRO, CCoE intrinsically safe) and any dust purge for S-87.

Installing and commissioning SmartLine NCR

Mount the antenna so that the beam has a clear path to the product surface, away from filling streams, ladders and tank walls; a narrower beam allows more freedom in nozzle choice. The measuring distance counts from the lower edge of the flange or thread, and the area at the end of the antenna cannot be measured. On solids silos use the air purge or dust shield options to keep the lens clean.

The measurement interval is about 1 s with an adjust time of about 3 s. After connecting a 12 to 30 V loop (a minimum of 250 ohm loop resistance is needed for HART communication), set empty and full distances, run a false echo learn if there are obstructions, and verify with a manual tape or sight-glass reading.

Typical SmartLine NCR applications in Oman and the GCC

Non-contact radar suits chemical and fuel storage tanks, process vessels, sump and slop tanks, water treatment and desalination chemical dosing tanks, and powders and bulk solids in storage silos. The 80 GHz beam handles the dusty and hot conditions of Gulf sites, and PTFE or PEEK-faced 316L antennas stand up to aggressive liquids and solids.

Information to send with a SmartLine NCR RFQ

  • Model (SLN700L-82, SLN700L-83 or SLN700S-87) and antenna code, if known.
  • Product, dielectric constant, temperature and pressure range.

About brand

Honeywell is the American industrial technology group whose products on this site cover gas and flame detection, pressure transmitters, flow measurement, gas metering, fire alarm systems and helicopter rotor balancing equipment. Its roots go back to a thermostat business in Minneapolis in 1885 and to Mark Honeywell's heating company, which merged with it in 1927. Several brands we list have joined Honeywell over the years: Gent fire systems of Leicester (part of Honeywell since 2005), Chadwick-Helmuth (a Honeywell business unit from 2002) and Elster gas metering (acquired around the end of 2015).

Seven Star LLC is an independent supplier in Muscat. We list Honeywell gas detectors and sensors, transmitters, Elster gas meters and flow computers, Gent fire alarm equipment and Chadwick-Helmuth balancers, and supply them and their spares in Oman and the GCC by part number.

Gas detection uses two basic approaches. Point detectors such as the Sensepoint XCD measure the gas at one location, with a catalytic or infrared sensor for flammable gas and an electrochemical cell for toxic gas such as H2S. Open path detectors such as the Searchline Excel send an infrared beam across an area up to a few hundred metres long and detect a gas cloud anywhere along it. Infrared sensors cannot be poisoned the way catalytic beads can, which matters on sites with silicones or H2S.

Where Honeywell products are used

In Oman and the GCC, Honeywell gas detectors protect wellheads, gas plants, refineries and tank farms. Elster meters and flow computers measure gas at city gate stations and in industry. Gent systems are installed in commercial buildings, hospitals and hotels, and Chadwick-Helmuth balancers are used by helicopter operators.

Ordering Honeywell products: what we need

Send the part number from the label (for example 02104-N-XSSA or SPXCDASMTXF). For gas detectors, add the gas, range, output and certification. For gas meters, add size (DN), flow range and pressure rating. For Gent equipment, add the panel type and loop protocol.

Facts checked against Honeywell press releases and SEC filings, and published histories of Gent and Chadwick-Helmuth, October 2026.
