How a reusable half facepiece respirator is used

The facepiece itself does not filter anything. Protection comes from the pair of filters or cartridges attached to it, and those are selected for the contaminant. Particulate filters stop dust, mist and fume from grinding, cutting, blasting and welding. Gas and vapor cartridges contain a sorbent for a defined group of substances, such as organic vapors or acid gases. Combination cartridges do both. Filters and cartridges are consumables, and gas and vapor cartridges must be changed on a schedule, before the sorbent is used up.

Limits and selection of air-purifying respirators

A half mask is a tight-fitting respirator. It only protects when it seals on the face, so each wearer needs the right size and a fit test, and facial hair under the seal defeats it. Air-purifying respirators do not supply oxygen. They must not be used in oxygen-deficient atmospheres, in unknown concentrations or in conditions immediately dangerous to life, where supplied air or self-contained breathing apparatus is required. Selection therefore starts from the contaminant, its concentration against the exposure limit and the duration of the work.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which filters or cartridges do I need with a half facepiece respirator?
It depends on the contaminant. Dust, mist and metal fume need a particulate filter. Solvent vapors need an organic vapor cartridge, and acid gases, ammonia or other gases each need the cartridge type approved for them. Where particles and vapors occur together, as in spray painting, a combination is used. Tell us the substances and we check the matching filter in the manufacturer's selection guide.
Do I need a fit test for a half mask?
Yes. A tight-fitting respirator protects only if it seals against the wearer's face. A fit test, qualitative or quantitative, confirms that the chosen model and size seal on that person, and it is repeated when the model, size or the wearer's facial shape changes. The wearer should also do a short seal check every time the mask is put on.
Can this respirator be used in a confined space?
Only if the atmosphere has been tested and shown to contain enough oxygen, and the contaminant is known and within the limits of the respirator and filter. An air-purifying half mask does not supply air. Oxygen-deficient or unknown atmospheres require supplied-air or self-contained breathing apparatus under the site's confined space entry procedure.
How often should filters and cartridges be replaced?
Replace particulate filters when breathing becomes noticeably harder, when they are damaged or dirty, or as the manufacturer instructs. Gas and vapor cartridges should be changed on a schedule based on the contaminant, concentration and work rate, and at the latest when the wearer notices smell, taste or irritation. Follow the manufacturer's instructions and your site respiratory protection program.
Is the medium size suitable for everyone?
No. Half facepieces are made in several sizes because faces differ, and medium fits many but not all wearers. The correct size for each person is confirmed by a fit test. If your team needs other sizes, send the quantities per size and we check the corresponding versions in the manufacturer documentation and include them in the offer.
