Alarm Beacons & Call Points
Alarm beacons and manual call points are the visual signals and manual triggers of fire and gas alarm systems. In oil and gas, chemical and other hazardous areas they must be certified so they cannot ignite flammable atmospheres. Seven Star LLC, an independent supplier in Muscat, supplies MEDC hazardous area beacons and call points (MEDC is part of Eaton) to oil and gas, petrochemical and industrial projects in Oman and the GCC.

The MEDC SM87 flameproof beacon uses a xenon strobe for high-intensity warning in ATEX Zone 1 and Zone 2 areas, and the SM87LED range offers long-life LED versions with lower power consumption. Lens colours such as red, amber, blue and green identify different alarm conditions. The MEDC BG2E break glass manual call point, in Ex de construction, lets personnel raise the alarm manually, with options for different contact configurations and end-of-line devices. These devices are commonly combined with hazardous area sounders and gas detectors in fire and gas systems.
How to select beacons and call points
Confirm the hazardous area classification (zone, gas group and temperature class) and the certifications required, such as ATEX, IECEx or regional approvals. For beacons, choose the light source (xenon or LED), flash rate, intensity and lens colour to match the site alarm philosophy. Check the supply voltage, cable entries, enclosure material and IP rating for coastal and desert conditions. For call points, choose break glass or resettable operation, contact arrangement and any monitoring resistors needed by the fire panel.

Frequently Asked Questions
Ex d is flameproof protection, where the enclosure contains any internal explosion. Ex de combines a flameproof chamber with an increased-safety (Ex e) terminal chamber, which makes wiring simpler.
Xenon strobes give very high peak intensity. LED beacons use less power, last much longer and need less maintenance.
Sites use colours to distinguish alarms, for example red for fire, amber or yellow for gas, and blue for other warnings. The site alarm philosophy defines the scheme.
Beacons are used together with sounders, especially in noisy areas or where hearing protection is worn. Most standards require both audible and visual alarms.
