Types of mechanical seal in this category

Elastomer bellows seals such as John Crane Type 1, 2, 21 and 2100 serve water and general duties. Balanced pusher seals like the EagleBurgmann H7N and H74-D, and cartridge seals such as Cartex-SN, Cartex-DN and John Crane Type 5610, simplify installation. Metal bellows seals (EagleBurgmann MFL85N, Flowserve BX and BXRH) handle high temperatures, and API 682 cartridge seals such as Flowserve ISC2 and EagleBurgmann SHV are used in refinery and petrochemical pumps. Gas-lubricated double seals, high-energy seals for boiler feed and hot water service, and barrier fluids complete the range.

How to select a mechanical seal

Define the shaft diameter, pump model and seal chamber dimensions, then the fluid, temperature, pressure and speed. Choose single or dual arrangement and the API 682 category and plan where required. Face materials (carbon, silicon carbide, tungsten carbide) and elastomers (FKM, EPDM, FFKM) must suit the fluid.

Data needed for a quotation

Send the seal model and size, or pump make and model, shaft diameter, fluid, temperature, pressure, speed and quantity.

What to include in your inquiry

These details let us quote the right item the first time.

  • Fluid pumped and its temperature
  • Flow rate and head
  • Material of construction
  • Motor power supply
  • Model and serial number, for spare parts
  • Hazardous-area requirement, if any

Missing some of them? Send what you have. A nameplate photo or an old part number is enough to start.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between a cartridge and a component seal?
A cartridge seal is pre-assembled and pre-set on its own sleeve and gland, so it fits quickly without measurement. A component seal is assembled on the shaft and needs careful setting.
When is a metal bellows seal used?
For high temperatures or fluids that attack elastomers, because the bellows replaces the dynamic O-ring and springs.
What is API 682?
It is the standard for shaft sealing systems in centrifugal and rotary pumps in the petroleum, petrochemical and gas industries, covering seal categories, arrangements and piping plans.
Why use a dual seal?
A dual seal with a barrier or buffer fluid gives extra containment for hazardous, toxic or volatile fluids.
What should I send for a quotation?
The seal model and size, or the pump make and model, shaft size, fluid, temperature, pressure and speed.
