Submerged Arc Fluxes
Submerged arc fluxes are the granular materials that cover the arc in submerged arc welding (SAW), shielding the pool, forming slag and influencing weld metal chemistry. The listing currently includes six Böhler Marathon and UV series fluxes, among them fluoride-basic and aluminate-basic types for stainless steel and P91 and P92 steels. Seven Star LLC in Muscat, Oman also sources other SAW flux on request, normally together with the wire it will be used with, because the two are classified and qualified as a combination. The listing will be extended as the welding range grows.

Fused, agglomerated, active and neutral fluxes
Fluxes are made by two routes. Fused fluxes are melted and crushed, which makes them homogeneous and resistant to moisture pickup. Agglomerated fluxes are bonded and baked at lower temperature, which allows deoxidizers and alloying elements to be included, but they take up moisture more readily and usually need re-drying before use.
By behavior, active fluxes add manganese and silicon to the weld in proportion to arc voltage and are meant for single-pass or limited-pass welds. Neutral fluxes change weld chemistry very little with voltage and suit thick multi-pass joints. High-basicity fluxes give cleaner weld metal with better low-temperature toughness, which is why they are specified for pressure vessels, offshore structures and line pipe on GCC projects.
What we need to source a submerged arc flux
Send the flux-wire classification from your procedure, for example the AWS A5.17 designation, or the trade name in use. Add the wire class and diameter, base metal grade and thickness, required impact temperature, whether the joint is stress relieved, the quantity and bag size, and the certificate type.
What to include in your inquiry
These details let us quote the right item the first time.
- AWS or EN classification
- Diameter
- Base material to be welded
- Packaging (spool, drum, kg) and quantity
- Approvals or certificates required
Missing some of them? Send what you have. A nameplate photo or an old part number is enough to start.

Frequently Asked Questions
Fused flux is melted in a furnace and crushed into glassy grains. It is chemically uniform and picks up little moisture. Agglomerated flux is made by bonding powdered ingredients and baking them, so it can carry deoxidizers and alloys and generally gives better toughness, but it absorbs moisture and is more easily broken down into fines during recycling.
It is an AWS A5.17 designation for a tested combination. F means flux, 7 is the minimum tensile strength of the weld metal in units of 10 ksi, A means tested as welded (P would mean after post-weld heat treatment), 2 is the impact test temperature code, and EM12K is the wire used. The result applies to that flux and wire together.
Agglomerated fluxes generally do if the bag has been open or stored in humid conditions, and basic fluxes for low-hydrogen work are the most sensitive. Re-dry at the temperature and time given by the flux manufacturer, then keep the flux in a heated hopper or closed container. Damp flux causes porosity and raises the risk of hydrogen cracking.
Yes, the unmelted flux can be collected and returned to the hopper, provided it is sieved to remove slag pieces, mill scale and dust, and passed over a magnetic separator where needed. Repeated recycling changes the grain size distribution, so the usual practice is to blend recovered flux with new flux in a ratio the flux maker recommends.
The trade name or flux-wire classification in your procedure, the wire class and diameter, base metal grade and thickness, impact test temperature, heat treatment condition, quantity, packaging and certificate type. If the flux is for a pipe mill or a multi-wire process, say so, because not every flux tolerates high current and multiple arcs.
