Ultrasonic Sensors

Ultrasonic sensors measure distance with sound pulses, so they detect objects regardless of colour, transparency or surface finish, and work in dust and mist that blind optical sensors. Types of ultrasonic sensor in this category

Cylindrical M12, M18 and M30 sensors such as the SICK UM12, UM18 and UM30 and the Turck RU series cover ranges from a few centimetres to several metres. Versions with switching outputs detect presence and level points; versions with 4 to 20 mA or 0 to 10 V outputs give a continuous distance signal, for example tank level or roll diameter. Compact rectangular sensors like the SICK UC4 fit tight machine spaces, retro-reflective ultrasonic sensors check a gap against a fixed reflector, and the SICK UF fork sensor detects labels on a carrier web, including clear labels on clear film.

How to select an ultrasonic sensor

Start with the measuring range, including the blind zone close to the sensor face, and the beam angle, which sets how wide an area the sensor sees. Choose the output: PNP or NPN switching, analogue current or voltage, or IO-Link. Check the response time for moving objects and the resolution needed. Temperature affects the speed of sound, so sensors with compensation give better accuracy in hot GCC plant rooms. Soft materials such as foam absorb sound and reduce the range.

Send the full part number for a replacement, or the target, required range, output, housing size, connection and quantity. We confirm each item against the manufacturer data.

What to include in your inquiry

These details let us quote the right item the first time.

  • Measured variable and range
  • Medium, pressure and temperature
  • Process connection and material
  • Output signal or protocol
  • Model code or nameplate photo of the existing device
  • Hazardous-area approval, if required

Missing some of them? Send what you have. A nameplate photo or an old part number is enough to start.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the blind zone of an ultrasonic sensor?
It is the short distance in front of the sensor face where no object can be detected, because the transducer is still ringing after sending the pulse. The datasheet gives it; mount the sensor so the target never comes closer than this distance.
Can ultrasonic sensors measure liquid level?
Yes, they are often used on tanks and sumps with a 4 to 20 mA output. Foam, heavy vapour, agitation and internal structures in the tank can affect the echo, so these should be considered when choosing the range and mounting point.
Do ultrasonic sensors work on transparent objects?
Yes. Sound reflects from glass, clear plastic and liquids just as from opaque objects, which is the main advantage over many photoelectric sensors.
Does temperature affect accuracy?
The speed of sound changes with air temperature, so distance readings drift without compensation. Many sensors include temperature compensation; for precise measurement choose such a model and avoid strong air currents across the beam.
What should I send for a quotation?
The order code, or the target, the measuring range, the output type, the housing size, the connection and the quantity.
