Pumps, Electric Motors and Gas Turbine Parts

Specifying motors, pumps and gear units as a train
Rotating equipment is selected as a train. The pump or driven machine sets the required speed, torque and power, the motor is sized for that load and its starting method, and a gear unit adapts speed and torque where needed. Supply voltage and frequency, ambient temperature and area classification apply to every item in the train. Summer ambient temperatures in the Gulf often lead to derating or to a higher insulation and cooling specification. Motors follow IEC 60034 or NEMA MG 1, and process pumps commonly API 610 or ASME B73.1.
What to send for a quotation
For new equipment send the duty data: liquid, flow and head for pumps, power, speed, voltage and mounting for motors, ratio and output torque for gear units. For replacements and spares send the nameplate data and serial number. We check the selection against the manufacturer documentation, propose the manufacturer’s successor when a model is obsolete, and provide the manufacturer’s datasheet and certificates on request.

Can a pump be quoted together with its motor and baseplate?
Many pump manufacturers offer their pumps as a bare shaft unit or as a complete set with coupling, guard, baseplate and motor. Tell us which scope you need and, for a complete set, the motor brand preference, voltage, frequency, efficiency class and Ex protection. We request the configuration as the manufacturer builds it and pass on the manufacturer's general arrangement drawing with the offer when available.
What nameplate data should I send for a replacement motor?
Manufacturer, type designation and serial number, rated power, voltage, frequency, speed, current, frame size, mounting arrangement (foot, flange or both), enclosure and cooling type, insulation class, duty type and any Ex marking. For gearmotors add the ratio or output speed, mounting position and shaft or hollow-shaft dimensions. A clear photo of the nameplate usually covers everything.
How does high ambient temperature affect motor selection?
Standard motors are rated for a defined maximum ambient temperature, commonly 40 °C. Above that the permitted output falls unless the motor is built with a higher insulation class or more thermal reserve. State the real site ambient, the altitude and if the motor stands in direct sun or runs on a frequency converter, and the manufacturer's derating data is applied to the selection.
Which standards usually apply to pumps and motors in oil and gas projects?
Centrifugal process pumps are normally specified to API 610 and their mechanical seals to API 682, with ASME B73.1 or ISO 5199 for chemical and utility duties. Positive displacement pumps follow API 674, 675 or 676 depending on type. Motors follow IEC 60034 or NEMA MG 1, and Ex motors need ATEX or IECEx certification. The project specification decides which apply.
Can you source gas turbine spare parts that are not listed?
The gas turbine group currently shows only a few listings, and it is being extended. Parts for other models can be requested. Send the turbine manufacturer and model, the unit serial number and the part or drawing number from the illustrated parts catalog. We check the reference against the manufacturer documentation before making an offer.
What should a rotating equipment inquiry include?
For pumps: liquid properties, flow, head, suction conditions, materials and seal type. For motors: power, speed, voltage, frequency, frame size, mounting and protection type. For gear units: input power and speed, ratio, output torque, mounting position and shaft arrangement. In every case add ambient conditions, area classification and applicable standards. For replacements, nameplate data and serial number come first.
