About Filtration Elements

Types of filter elements listed
Pall Ultipleat High Flow cartridges are large-diameter pleated elements designed to carry a high flow per cartridge, which keeps the number of elements and the size of the housing down on water and process liquid duties. The 3M elements are a high flow cartridge and a depth filter cartridge. Pall Profile coreless elements are depth filters listed here for gas filtration; in a coreless design the support core stays in the housing and only the media is discarded. Pall Medallion elements are liquid/liquid coalescers that separate two immiscible liquids, for example water from a hydrocarbon stream. The Parker element is a coalescing filter element for removing liquid aerosol from a gas stream. The Bosch Rexroth element is a hydraulic filter element identified by its material number. Scinor SMT600 modules are membrane modules for water treatment, listed as pressurized and submerged ultrafiltration versions and as a membrane bioreactor (MBR) module.
Matching a replacement filter element
An element has to match the housing and the duty. Check the outside diameter, length and end cap or connection style first, then the removal rating and how it is defined, the media and hardware materials, the seal material and the maximum differential pressure. Flow direction matters too: some elements work from the outside in, others from the inside out. For hydraulic elements, the rating is normally given as a beta ratio under ISO 16889, and fluid cleanliness is expressed as an ISO 4406 code.
Where these elements are used
In gas plants and refineries across the GCC, coalescers and gas elements protect compressors, burners and amine or glycol units from liquids and solids. High flow cartridges serve as prefilters ahead of reverse osmosis and on injection water. Ultrafiltration modules remove suspended solids and microorganisms from surface water, seawater and treated effluent.
What to send for an element quotation
Send the element part number and the housing model. If the number is unknown, give dimensions, end cap style, rating, media, seal material, fluid, flow and temperature, with a photo of the old element.

Can an element of another brand be used in an existing filter housing?
Only when the dimensions, sealing arrangement, flow direction, rating and collapse pressure all match. Interchange elements exist for many housings, but performance is not identical simply because the element fits. For coalescers and absolute-rated process filters the housing manufacturer's element is normally what the performance data is based on. Tell us if you need the original make or will consider an equivalent.
What is a beta ratio on a hydraulic filter element?
The beta ratio comes from the ISO 16889 multi-pass test for hydraulic filters. It is the number of particles of a given size upstream of the filter divided by the number downstream. A beta of 200 at a stated size means one particle in 200 passes, which is 99.5 percent efficiency. It allows elements from different makers to be compared on the same basis.
What is the difference between pressurized and submerged ultrafiltration modules?
Pressurized modules are closed housings fed by a pump and mounted in racks on a skid; they are compact and suit clean to moderately loaded feed water. Submerged modules hang in an open tank and the filtered water is drawn out under slight vacuum, which tolerates more solids in the feed. The two are not interchangeable, since the plant is built around one or the other.
When should coalescer elements be changed?
Replace them when the differential pressure reaches the manufacturer's changeout value, or when liquid carryover appears downstream even at low pressure drop, which indicates damaged or disarmed media. Surfactants and some corrosion inhibitors reduce coalescing performance without raising pressure drop. A prefilter upstream extends coalescer life considerably, because solids are what usually block the media.
Which documents can be supplied with filter elements?
On request we provide the manufacturer's datasheet for the element and the certificates the manufacturer issues. Depending on the product these can include a certificate of conformity, material declarations and, for elements used in food, beverage or pharmaceutical duties, statements of compliance for materials in contact with the product. Ask at inquiry stage, and quote the exact part number so the documents refer to the same item.
