What an oxy-fuel cutting outfit includes

A basic gas cutting set consists of an oxygen regulator and a fuel gas regulator, hoses, flashback arrestors, a torch handle with cutting attachment or a dedicated cutting torch, and nozzles sized for the plate thickness. Nozzles are made for one fuel gas. Acetylene nozzles and propane or natural gas nozzles are not interchangeable, and regulators and hoses are also specific to the gas. Machine cutting torches for straight-line carriages and profile tables use the same principle with a longer barrel.

Where oxy-fuel cutting is still the right method

The process only works on carbon and low-alloy steel, because it depends on the iron oxidizing. Stainless steel and aluminum need plasma. Its strengths are thick plate, low equipment cost and independence from electricity, which is why it remains common in steel fabrication, demolition, ship repair and site work across the GCC.

Information for an oxy-fuel inquiry

Send the fuel gas, the plate thickness range, manual or machine cutting, the cylinder connection standard used on your site, hose length, and the torch make and nozzle type if you are adding to existing equipment.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can oxy-fuel equipment cut stainless steel or aluminum?
No. Oxy-fuel cutting relies on iron burning in the oxygen jet and on the oxide melting at a lower temperature than the steel. Stainless steel and aluminum form oxides that do not melt away, so the cut stops. These metals are cut with plasma, laser or mechanical methods. Oxy-fuel is for carbon and low-alloy steels.
Acetylene or propane: which fuel gas is better for cutting?
Acetylene has the hottest flame, so it preheats and pierces fastest and suits short cuts, thin plate and work where distortion matters. Propane preheats more slowly but costs less, is easier to store in quantity and gives good results on long cuts in thicker plate. Each gas needs its own nozzle design, regulator and hose type.
Where should flashback arrestors be fitted?
Common practice, and a requirement in many site safety rules, is to fit a flashback arrestor on both the oxygen and the fuel gas line at the regulator outlet. Many sites also require arrestors or non-return valves at the torch inlets. They stop a flame or reverse gas flow from reaching the hoses and cylinders. Check the rule that applies on your site.
How is the cutting nozzle size selected?
By plate thickness and fuel gas, using the torch manufacturer's cutting chart. The chart gives the nozzle size, oxygen and fuel pressures and cutting speed for each thickness range. A nozzle that is too small will not get through the plate. One that is too large wastes gas and leaves a wide, rough kerf with a melted top edge.
What do you need from me to source oxy-fuel cutting equipment?
The fuel gas, the thickness range, and whether cutting is by hand or on a machine carriage. Add the regulator inlet connection standard used for cylinders at your site, hose length and diameter, and the safety devices required. If the items must fit an existing torch, send its make and model so nozzle seats and connections match.
