Elster EK280 Gas Volume Conversion Device

Description

Battery-powered gas volume converter with flexible archives and communication

The Elster EK280 is a compact, battery-powered electronic volume conversion device (EVC) that turns the operating volume measured by a diaphragm, turbine or rotary gas meter into volume at base conditions. It reads the meter either from flow-proportional LF or HF pulses or from the original readings of an absolute-encoder index, and it calculates the conversion factor C and the compressibility ratio K from the measured gas temperature and pressure.

The basic unit has an integrated or external pressure sensor and a permanently connected temperature sensor. A second pressure sensor and a second temperature sensor are available as options. Honeywell lists three applications: volume conversion for billing, data recording for various purposes, and station monitoring through extra inputs and outputs.

Communication, archives and station monitoring

Three serial interfaces work independently and at the same time. The optical port on the front is used for commissioning, the terminal-block interface connects a function extension unit or third-party communication hardware, and a plug-in slot takes the modem or Ethernet module. The EK280 identifies the protocol of an incoming request automatically, so a billing system can poll over DLMS/COSEM or IEC 62056-21 while a SCADA system reads Modbus. Software updates follow WELMEC 7.2 and can be made locally or remotely with encryption. Up to five of the six inputs can serve as status or pulse inputs for filter differential pressure, inlet pressure or regulator and safety shut-off valve status.

Installation and commissioning

The housing has mounting holes for the wall, brackets are available for the index head of an Elster gas meter, and pipe-mounting brackets exist as well. Besides the places for adhesive seals, two holes on the outside take wire seals. Batteries can be replaced without breaking the seals and the parameters stay in non-volatile memory. Parameterisation uses the enSuite software. If the integrated 2G modem is used in Ex zone 0/1, a separate lithium battery module powers it; in Ex zone 2 or safe areas a power supply unit is offered instead.

Documents and quotation

State the meter type and its pulse or encoder output, the pressure range, the gas and the compressibility method required, the hazardous-area zone, the communication path (modem, Ethernet or serial) and whether the legal-metrology approval applies to your project. The datasheet edition is January 2022.

The attached Honeywell datasheet describes the EK280 functions, archives, interfaces and technical data. Seven Star LLC, an independent supplier in Muscat, quotes the unit against your configuration. About brand

Gas measurement stations are the home ground of Elster: ultrasonic gas meters in the meter run and flow computers in the station cabinet. The name goes back to 1848, with a base in Wiesbaden, Germany, and the products are marketed today as Honeywell Elster. Seven Star LLC sources and supplies Elster ultrasonic flow meters, gas flow computers and station communication units for pipeline and utility operators in Oman.

Elster product families listed here

The Elster flow meter on this page is the Q.Sonic plus, a multipath ultrasonic gas meter for custody transfer measurement, listed together with a USM display unit. Flow computers come from two device series. The enCore series is represented by the enCore FC1 and the enCore ZM1. The gas-net series is represented by the gas-net F1 flow computer and the gas-net D2, a data forwarding unit for the DSfG station interface used in German-standard gas metering systems.

Where Elster gas metering equipment is used

Elster gas meters and flow computers work at transmission and distribution metering stations, city gate and pressure reduction stations, power plant and industrial fuel gas inlets, and gas storage sites. The flow computer converts measured volume to base conditions using pressure, temperature and gas quality data, records the fiscal archives and passes data to the SCADA system.

Ordering Elster meters and flow computers: what we need

For an ultrasonic meter: nominal size, pressure rating and flange standard, flow range, gas composition, operating pressure and temperature, the metrological approval required and the flow calibration expected. For a flow computer: device type, the serial number and software version of the existing unit, the I/O boards fitted, the meters and transmitters connected, the conversion and compressibility method (for example AGA 8) and the communication protocols. A photo of the type plate and the parameter printout shorten the check against the manufacturer's documentation considerably.
