Technical Overview

The Gent VIG-LPC-EN is an addressable loop driver card for the Gent (by Honeywell) Vigilon fire alarm control panel range, used to drive one analogue-addressable detection loop and expand a panel’s overall device capacity. Per Gent’s product documentation as reproduced by authorized UK fire-and-security distributors, the VIG-LPC-EN is compatible with the Vigilon Plus panel range, specifically the VIGPLUS-24 and VIGPLUS-72 control panels, with one loop card required per detection loop the panel supports.

Each loop driven by the VIG-LPC-EN card supports a maximum loop cable length of up to 2 km, extendable further using Gent’s own loop-load design calculation tool, with a loop current of up to 800 mA when used with the new range of alarm devices (400 mA per loop with older S-Quad or S-Cubed alarm devices). A key capability of this loop card version is support for up to 100 EN54-23-compliant sensor-sounder-strobe visual alarm devices (VADs) on a single 2 km loop, reflecting the growing use of visual alarm devices alongside audible sounders in modern fire alarm system design to meet accessibility and noise-sensitive-environment requirements. VIG-LPC-EN Loop Capacity: When 800 mA and 2 km Actually Apply

Honeywell Gent designed the VIG-LPC-EN to carry a heavier alarm load than the earlier VIG-LPC card, chiefly so that EN54-23 visual alarm devices can be loop powered. The headline figures are 800 mA alarm current, 2 km of loop and up to 200 devices, of which as many as 100 may be S-Quad sensor-sounder-VADs. The manufacturer describes this as twice the alarm power of the previous card with no loss of standby. The older VIG-LPC is limited to loops under 1 km and under 400 mA.

Those maximum values come with conditions. The 800 mA alarm load is available only when the loop is populated with the new range of alarm devices; if any of the older S-Quad or S-Cubed alarm devices are present, the limit falls back to 400 mA per loop. The 2 km length assumes 1.5 mm² cable and depends on how many sounders and VADs are fitted and where they sit along the loop. Honeywell states that in some layouts the card will support fewer devices or less than 2 km.

For that reason the loop should be checked with the Honeywell Gent Battery Standby and Loop Load Calculator Tool before cable sizes are fixed; the Vigilon Plus specification quotes 2.5 km with 2.5 mm² cable. During commissioning the card measures the resistance of each loop when devices are allocated and shows it on the panel, raising a fault if it exceeds a safe limit, which gives the engineer a recorded verification of loop length.

VIG-LPC-EN Panel and Device Compatibility for Upgrades

VIG-LPC-EN is the order code for the Vigilon Plus loop card and is the card used in VIGPLUS-24 and VIGPLUS-72 panels, which hold up to four and six loops respectively. The Compact Plus panel uses a different part, COMPACT-LPC-EN. Honeywell also positions the card as an upgrade for existing EN54 Vigilon 4 and 6 loop installations, where the loop diagnostics function needs panel software above V4.51. Because the new card software is not produced in BS protocol, it cannot be used in 3400 panels or in BS-protocol Vigilon and 34000 export panels.

On the device side, the Honeywell Gent documentation contains a device-by-device compatibility matrix by year of manufacture. It covers S-Quad sensors, sensor sounders and sensor sounders with EN54-23 VAD, S-Cubed sounders, 34000 and 3400 series devices, manual call points and loop or mains powered interfaces. For a retrofit, the installed device list should be checked line by line against that matrix, remembering that older alarm devices hold the loop to 400 mA. Host panels are specified for 0 to 45 °C.
