Fire alarm control panels, gas detection controllers and safety system controllers
A conventional fire alarm panel monitors zones wired as separate circuits, so it reports the zone in alarm but not the individual device. An addressable panel communicates with every detector and call point on a loop and reports the exact device. Loop cards add loops to a panel. A gas detection controller accepts the signals of gas detectors, applies alarm thresholds and switches relays. A fire and gas safety system controller combines flame and gas detection with the release of extinguishing systems on a fault-tolerant network.
Compatibility is the first check for any panel or card
Addressable loops run on a manufacturer protocol, so detectors, call points, interfaces and loop cards must belong to the same system family as the panel. Rack-based controllers are similar: a card is valid only for a given rack, software level and channel type. Spare cards are therefore ordered by the complete part number. We check that number against the manufacturer documentation and propose the manufacturer’s successor if it has been superseded.
Standards that apply to fire and gas logic controllers
Fire alarm control and indicating equipment is covered by EN 54-2 and its power supply by EN 54-4. Projects designed to NFPA 72 usually ask for UL or FM listed panels. Controllers used in process safety functions are specified with a SIL capability to IEC 61508.
Information for a control panel quotation
State the number of zones or loops, the number and type of devices per loop, the outputs needed for sounders and plant interfaces, the standby time on batteries and any networking between panels. For a card or spare, send the part number and the model of the existing system. We handle inquiries from across the GCC.
What to include in your inquiry
These details let us quote the right item the first time.
- Hazard to detect (flammable gas, toxic gas, flame, smoke)
- Detection principle, if specified
- Output: 4-20 mA, relay, HART, Modbus
- Area classification and approvals required
- Existing controller model, for compatibility
- Quantity and spares
Missing some of them? Send what you have. A nameplate photo or an old part number is enough to start.

Frequently Asked Questions
A conventional panel has a fixed number of zone circuits and identifies an alarm only by zone, which suits small buildings. An addressable panel polls each device on a loop by its address, shows the exact location of an alarm or fault, and allows cause and effect programming by device or group. Addressable systems need less cable on larger sites and are easier to extend.
Only if the panel model was built to take it. Each panel type has a maximum number of loops, and the card must be the version made for that panel and its software level. The power supply and standby batteries also have to carry the extra loop load. Send the panel model, the cards already fitted and the software version shown on the display.
Not as a rule. Fire detection needs control and indicating equipment approved to the fire alarm standard that applies to the project, and process fire and gas functions need a logic solver with a SIL capability certified to IEC 61508, including defined diagnostics and fault behavior. A standard PLC has neither approval, even if it could be programmed to perform the same logic.
Identify the full part number on the card label, including any suffix, and the channel type: catalytic bridge input or 4-20 mA input, and the relay arrangement. Note the rack type and the other cards fitted beside it. Older systems often have several card generations with different compatibility, so we check the manufacturer documentation before confirming that the card will work in your rack.
Add up the current the panel and all connected devices draw in the quiescent state and multiply by the standby period required by the applicable code. Add the alarm current multiplied by the required alarm duration. Then apply the aging and derating factor the code or the manufacturer specifies. The result must fit within the maximum battery size the panel charger is designed for.
