Solenoid directional control valves and the ISO 4401 interface

A directional control valve uses a sliding spool to connect the pump, tank and two working ports in different combinations, which starts, stops and reverses a cylinder or hydraulic motor. In a solenoid operated valve the spool is shifted by one or two coils and returned by springs. ISO 4401 standardizes the port pattern on the mounting face. Size 03, also called NG6 or CETOP 3, is the smallest common size, and valves of this size from different manufacturers share the same bolt and port layout, so they fit the same subplate or manifold.

Details needed to identify a hydraulic valve

The full ordering code on the nameplate is the most reliable reference. It defines the spool type, the center position, spring arrangement, coil voltage, connector and seal material. If the code is unreadable, send the interface size, the spool symbol from the circuit diagram, the coil voltage, AC or DC, the maximum pressure and the fluid. What does ISO 4401-03 mean on a hydraulic valve?
ISO 4401 defines the mounting surfaces for hydraulic directional valves: the position of the P, T, A and B ports and the fixing bolt holes. Size 03 is also known as NG6 or CETOP 3. A valve built to this size bolts onto any subplate or manifold with the same pattern, whatever the make, although flow capacity and pressure limits must still be compared.
Can a directional valve from one manufacturer replace a valve from another?
Mechanically yes, when both follow the same ISO 4401 size. Functionally you must match the spool symbol, including what the ports do in the center position, the spring or detent arrangement, coil voltage and connector type, and seal material for the fluid. Compare the flow and pressure performance limits on the two datasheets, because they differ between spool types.
What is the spool center position and why does it matter?
On a three-position valve the spool rests in the center when neither coil is energized. The center configuration decides what the system does then: a closed center blocks all ports and holds the load, an open center lets pump flow return to tank, and a float center connects both working ports to tank. Choosing the wrong one changes how the machine behaves at rest.
Should I choose AC or DC solenoids on a hydraulic valve?
DC solenoids switch more softly and tolerate a spool that sticks, since their current does not depend on plunger position. AC solenoids switch faster but can overheat if the spool fails to complete its stroke. Many valves use DC coils with a rectifier built into the connector for AC supplies. Always match the coil voltage and type to the control circuit of the machine.
What information do you need to quote a hydraulic directional valve?
Send the complete ordering code from the nameplate. If it is damaged, provide the interface size, the spool symbol, single or double solenoid, coil voltage and connector type, seal material, maximum working pressure and the hydraulic fluid.
