Types of equipment in this category
Chromalox screw plug immersion heaters such as the MT/EMT and MTS/EMTS ranges heat water, oils and solutions in small tanks. Flange heaters like the Chromalox STFX handle larger tanks and higher loads, with sheath materials and watt densities chosen for the fluid. Circulation heaters heat fluids flowing through a pipe loop. Raychem self-regulating heating cables maintain pipe and vessel temperatures and reduce output as they warm, while skin-effect tracing such as the STS system heats long pipelines up to many kilometres from a single supply point.
How to select a heater or tracing system
For immersion heaters, define the fluid, required temperature rise and heat-up time, then calculate power and choose watt density and sheath material to avoid fouling or overheating the fluid. Choose the terminal enclosure for the area classification. For heat tracing, calculate heat loss from pipe size, insulation and ambient conditions, then select the cable type, output and control method. Hazardous areas need certified cables, terminations and temperature limiters.

Frequently Asked Questions
The heater power divided by its heated surface area. Viscous oils and heat-sensitive fluids need low watt density to avoid coking or degrading the fluid at the sheath.
A cable whose heating element reduces output as its temperature rises. It cannot overheat itself and can be cut to length and overlapped.
On long pipelines, often several kilometres, where conventional cables would need many power points. A single supply can heat a long section.
To keep viscous products such as heavy oil, wax and sulphur flowing, and to maintain process temperatures, not only to prevent freezing.
