LongTeng EL8 Carbon Steel Submerged Arc Welding Wire Supplied by Seven Star LLC

Submerged Arc Welding Wire

Submerged arc welding wire (SAW wire) is the solid wire fed under a layer of granular flux to weld thick plate and pipe at high deposition rates. Seven Star LLC supplies submerged arc wire in Oman from LongTeng and Lincoln Electric, with the carbon steel classes EL8, EM12, EM12K, EM13K and EH14 currently listed. These are the grades fabricators use for tank shells, pressure vessel seams, line pipe, wind tower sections and built-up beams.

What EL8, EM12K and EH14 mean

Carbon steel SAW wires are classified in AWS A5.17. E stands for electrode. The next letter gives the manganese level: L for low, M for medium, H for high. The number indicates the nominal carbon content, and K shows that the steel was silicon killed. EL8 is a low-manganese wire normally paired with a flux that contributes manganese. EM12K is the general-purpose choice for single and multi-pass welds. EH14 brings more manganese for higher strength and is often selected for multi-pass welds made with neutral fluxes.

Submerged arc wire and flux work as a pair

Weld metal properties in submerged arc welding come from the wire and flux combination, not from the wire alone. The combination carries its own classification, for example F7A2-EM12K, where the F part reports the strength and impact results obtained with that specific flux. Active fluxes add manganese and silicon in proportion to arc voltage and suit single-pass work. Neutral fluxes are preferred for thick multi-pass joints. When changing wire brand, check that the flux maker lists the new pairing.

What to send for a submerged arc wire quotation

Send the AWS class, wire diameter, coil or drum weight, total quantity, the flux brand and type you run, the plate grade and thickness, and any impact temperature or post-weld heat treatment condition from the procedure. Vessel shops and pipe mills in the GCC usually need a 3.1 certificate with the wire, so state that too.

What to include in your inquiry

These details let us quote the right item the first time.

  • AWS or EN classification
  • Diameter
  • Base material to be welded
  • Packaging (spool, drum, kg) and quantity
  • Approvals or certificates required

Missing some of them? Send what you have. A nameplate photo or an old part number is enough to start.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I choose between EM12K and EH14 submerged arc wire?
EM12K is the usual starting point for carbon steel plate in single and multi-pass welds. EH14 has more manganese, so with a neutral flux it helps hold strength and toughness through many passes or after stress relief. The decision is made on the flux-wire classification that meets your required strength and impact temperature, not on the wire class alone.
Can I use this wire with a flux from another manufacturer?
Technically yes, since the AWS wire class is brand independent, but the weld metal properties are only documented for combinations that have been tested. Ask the flux manufacturer whether the pairing is listed with a flux-wire classification, and check if your code treats a change of wire or flux trade name as requiring requalification of the procedure.
Why is submerged arc wire copper coated, and how should it be stored?
The thin copper coating improves current pickup at the contact tip and slows rusting of the wire surface. It does not protect the coil indefinitely. Keep coils and drums in their wrapping in a dry store, cover wire left on the machine, and reject wire with visible rust, because rust carries moisture into the arc and causes porosity.
What packaging do submerged arc wires come in?
Typical forms are coils of a few tens of kilograms for standard reels and larger drums or payoff packs for long seams and tandem heads. The right form depends on your wire reel or payoff equipment and on how long a seam runs without a stop. Tell us the equipment you use and we will check the packaging options in the manufacturer documentation.
What data is needed to quote SAW wire?
The AWS classification, diameter, packaging form and weight, and total quantity. Add the flux brand and type, base metal grade and thickness, required impact test temperature and whether the joint is stress relieved, so we can check the combination against published flux-wire data. State the certificate type and any approved manufacturer list from the project.
