Complete diesel generator sets and bare engines

Two kinds of product sit side by side here. A generator set is a complete package: engine, alternator, base frame, cooling system and control panel, supplied open or inside a sound-attenuated canopy. A bare engine is what a packager, a pump builder or a repair shop needs for a new build or a repower. Engines for generator duty run at a fixed speed that sets the output frequency, 1500 rpm for 50 Hz with a four-pole alternator, and they are governed for that speed. Industrial variable-speed engines are rated differently, so the application must be stated in the inquiry. One DEUTZ engine for LPG and gasoline is also listed.

How to choose a diesel generator rating

Start with the duty. ISO 8528 separates emergency standby, prime and continuous power, and the same engine carries a different kVA figure under each. Then look at the load. The largest motor and its starting method usually decide the alternator size, not the running total. Non-linear loads such as UPS rectifiers and variable speed drives need extra alternator margin because of harmonic heating. Finally apply the site derating for ambient temperature and altitude that the manufacturer publishes for each engine. In the GCC a radiator rated for high ambient temperature is a normal requirement.

How do I size a diesel generator when the load includes large motors?

List every load with its running kW, then identify the largest motor and how it starts. A direct-on-line start draws several times the running current and causes a voltage dip that the alternator must limit to a level the other loads tolerate. Star-delta starters, soft starters and variable speed drives reduce that demand. The alternator is often selected one size larger than the engine power alone would suggest.

Can a standby-rated generator set be used as the main power source?

Not at its standby figure. A standby rating assumes limited running hours per year and a variable load during utility outages. For a site with no grid connection, the set must be selected on its prime rating, or on its continuous rating if the load is constant. In practice this means choosing a larger set than the standby kVA on the nameplate would indicate.

What is the difference between an AMF panel and a synchronizing panel?

An auto mains failure controller watches the utility supply, starts the set when the supply fails and commands the changeover, so the load is fed by either mains or generator but never both. A synchronizing panel matches voltage, frequency and phase so that the set can be connected in parallel with other sets or with the mains, and it shares active and reactive load between them.

Should I order an open-type or a canopy generator set?

An open set suits a dedicated generator room where the building provides weather protection, ventilation and sound attenuation. A canopy set carries its own weatherproof, sound-attenuated enclosure and is the usual choice for outdoor locations, construction sites and places with a noise limit. For a canopy set, state the required sound level and distance, since several attenuation grades exist.

Can you supply only the engine to repower an existing generator set?

Yes. To match a replacement engine to the existing alternator and frame we need the old engine model and serial number, rated power and speed, the flywheel housing and flywheel sizes, the governor type and the controller interface. If the original engine is no longer produced we propose the manufacturer's successor and list the differences in mounting, cooling and electrical connections for your review.
