Respiratory Protection and Hearing Protection

Respiratory Protection covers air-purifying respirators. The listed 3M half facepiece is a reusable mask body that takes replaceable particulate filters and gas and vapor cartridges, so the same facepiece can be set up for dust, welding fume, paint spray or solvent vapors by changing the filters.

Hearing Protection covers passive earmuffs for work near compressors, turbines, generators and power tools. Earmuffs are easy to put on correctly and suit people who move in and out of noisy areas.

Selecting safety equipment and PPE for the hazard

PPE is chosen from the hazard assessment of the task. For respirators that means the contaminant, its concentration and the oxygen level, since filtering respirators do not supply air. For hearing protection it means the measured noise level and the attenuation needed to bring exposure under the site limit without blocking alarms and speech. Approval standards differ by market, typically NIOSH or EN standards for respirators and NRR or EN 352 ratings for hearing protectors, so state which your site accepts.

When asking for a quotation, give the product or part number, size, quantity and the hazard it is for.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which PPE products are currently listed?
Two 3M items: a reusable half facepiece respirator in medium size and a Peltor over-the-head earmuff. The category was opened recently and further products are being added. If you need other sizes, filters and cartridges, disposable respirators, earplugs or different PPE types, send the manufacturer part numbers or a description of the task and we check what the manufacturer offers.
How do I choose between a disposable respirator and a reusable half mask?
A disposable filtering facepiece protects against particles only and is discarded after use. A reusable half mask accepts particulate filters, gas and vapor cartridges or combinations, so it covers more hazards and suits regular use. Both are tight-fitting and need a fit test for each wearer. Neither may be used where oxygen is deficient or the contaminant is unknown.
What do NRR and SNR mean on hearing protectors?
Both are single-number attenuation ratings measured in a laboratory. NRR is the rating used in the United States, and SNR is the rating used with European EN 352 testing. The two are determined by different methods, so the numbers for the same product are not identical. Real attenuation on site is usually lower than the label value because of fit and wearing time.
Which approvals should PPE carry for use on Gulf sites?
That is set by the site owner and local regulations. Many industrial sites in the region accept products approved to United States standards, such as NIOSH for respirators, or to European EN standards with CE marking. Check your company HSE procedure or contract requirements and tell us which standard applies. We provide the manufacturer's datasheet showing the approvals of the product.
What should I send for a PPE quotation?
The manufacturer part number if you have it, the size, the quantity and the hazard or task. For respirators, name the contaminant so the right filter or cartridge type is offered with the facepiece. For hearing protection, give the noise level at the work position and say if the earmuff must be worn together with a helmet.
