Gent S-Cubed Loop-Powered Sounder and EN54-23 Visual Alarm Device

Overview

The Gent S-Cubed is a range of loop powered alarm sounders, voice sounders and EN54-23 visual alarm devices (VADs) for Honeywell Gent Vigilon fire alarm systems. Honeywell Gent summarises the concept in one line: sound, speech and an EN54-23 visual alarm in one device. Because the devices draw their power and commands from the Vigilon detection loop, a building can be fitted with tone, voice and visual warnings without separate sounder circuits, and the panel can give a differentiated combination of audible and visual alarms for alert and general evacuation stages.

Contractors use these devices on new Vigilon installations and when existing conventional sounders are replaced during building upgrades, while consultants specify the VAD versions where people with hearing impairment, high ambient noise or ear protection mean an audible signal alone is not enough.

Operating Principle

Each Gent S-Cubed device has its own address on the Vigilon loop. When the panel processes a fire event, it sends the alarm command over the loop, and every sounder in the selected area starts its tone or message in synchronisation with S-Quad sensor sounders on the same system. Voice versions store four standard phrases and a bell tone: an alert message, two evacuation messages in female and male voices, and a test message. Voice and tone modes can be configured freely within the same sounder, so a two stage strategy can play an alert message in one sector while another sector is evacuated.

The visual alarm devices flash at 0.5 Hz and are certified to EN54-23, the European standard that defines light output in terms of coverage volume rather than candela. Gent S-Cubed VADs have adjustable light coverage, so the designer can match the visual coverage to the sounder output and room size. The panel actively monitors the sounder and VAD circuits in the background, and the volume can be adjusted from the commissioning tool, from the panel, or with the HandiLink infrared remote control at a distance of up to 3 m.

Engineering Design of the Gent S-Cubed

A standard Gent S-Cubed sounder produces 103 dB(A) ±3 dB(A) at 1 m and weighs about 0.3 kg. The standard range is rated IP21 for indoor use, and the environmentally protected EP range is rated IP66 for car parks, plant rooms, covered loading bays and other damp or dusty spaces. Devices are offered with red or white bodies, and VAD versions come in red or white flash colours with high, medium and low power settings that trade light coverage against loop load.

Very low power consumption is the design point that matters most to system designers. According to Honeywell Gent, each loop can support up to 200 voice sounders, 100 VAD-only devices and up to 70 combined sounder VADs, depending on power setting and loop load. The non-EP sounders mount on either a shallow or a standard base, and the S-Cubed range carries LPCB approval to EN54-3, EN54-23 and EN54-17.

The IP66 EP versions suit basement car parks, chiller plant rooms and covered service yards that see humidity and wash-down.
