Size guideways from load, moment, travel and required rigidity, and choose the accuracy and preload class for the machine. For ball screws check lead, critical speed, column buckling and nut life. Rails and blocks of the same series and accuracy class are interchangeable only as the maker states.

What is the difference between ball and roller type guideways?
Roller types make line contact and give higher rigidity and load capacity at the same size. Ball types run smoother with lower friction and cover most general machine uses.
What do accuracy and preload classes mean on a guideway?
Accuracy classes limit running parallelism and height tolerance, and preload classes set rigidity against friction. Higher classes suit machine tools, lower ones suit handling equipment.
What is the critical speed of a ball screw?
It is the rotational speed at which the screw resonates, set by diameter, length and end support. Operating speed is kept well below it, and larger diameter or a fixed end support raises the limit.
Why is lubrication important for linear guides?
A grease or oil film prevents metal contact between balls and raceways. Regreasing at the maker interval avoids premature wear, and wipers keep contamination out.
Can blocks be swapped between rails?
Interchangeable block types are offered in certain accuracy classes, so blocks can be changed without matching to a rail. Confirm the class and code with the manufacturer.
