How is a servo drive matched to a motor?
The drive must supply the continuous and peak current of the motor at the available supply voltage, and it must support the feedback device fitted to the motor. Motor and drive from the same family are normally selected as a pair from the manufacturer tables.
Why does the feedback type matter?
Resolvers, incremental encoders and absolute interfaces use different signals. A drive only works with the feedback types it supports, sometimes through an option card.
What is the difference between continuous and peak current?
Continuous current is what the drive can deliver indefinitely. Peak current is available only for a limited time during acceleration. Both figures must cover the duty cycle of the axis.
Can a replacement drive be fitted without re-commissioning?
Usually not. The parameter set, firmware version and any option modules of the original drive have to be transferred or set up again, so record them before removal.
What should I send for a quotation?
Send the full type code from the nameplate, the firmware or hardware revision if shown, the motor reference, the fieldbus used and the quantity.
