Elster GasLab Q2 Real-Time Natural Gas Quality Analyzer

Description

Natural gas quality analyzer without carrier gas or combustion air

The Elster GasLab Q2 is a real-time natural gas analyzer that determines calorific value, Wobbe index and other parameters in natural gas. Unlike a classic gas chromatograph it needs no carrier gas, no mixed calibration gases and no combustion air; it works only with passive infrared absorption and thermal conductivity measurements of the sample gas and is flameless. Routine calibration is automatic, at a time and day the user programs, and needs only purified methane.

Honeywell names five application areas: fiscal metering, gas turbine control for power plants, burner control, biogas and gas blending. In power plants the continuous signal lets the turbine control follow fluctuating gas quality, and in blending stations it helps hold the gas specification.

Where the analyzer is installed

The GasLab Q2 is designed for hazardous areas and wide ambient temperatures, so it can be placed close to the sample tap. A bypass flow meter is integrated into the housing to keep gas transport delay between the sample point and the analyzer short, which supports the fast response needed for turbine control. The housing has connections for sample gas, calibration gas, sensor vent and an optional bypass outlet, and the power and I/O wiring is reached from the top housing. Measured values leave as Modbus data or analog outputs, and contact inputs can monitor, for example, the low-pressure limit of the calibration bottle or the status of the sampling system.

Selecting and specifying the analyzer

The correlative method works within the gas ranges listed above, so confirm that your gas stays inside them, in particular methane share, C2+ content, CO2, nitrogen and the trace limits for oxygen, hydrogen and water. Hydrogen sulphide is limited separately in the datasheet, so ask for the current limit if sour gas is possible. Plan the sample line, sample conditioning and the methane calibration bottle, and decide whether energy values must be reported to a flow computer over Modbus.

Documents and quotation

State the application, gas composition range, sample pressure, area classification and the output signals required. The datasheet copy is dated June 2016, so ask for the current approval status before ordering.

The attached Honeywell datasheet lists the measured quantities, ranges, interfaces and approvals. Seven Star LLC, an independent supplier in Muscat, quotes the analyzer against the duty above. See Gas Analyzer Systems for related gas analysis equipment.

About brand

Gas measurement stations are the home ground of Elster: ultrasonic gas meters in the meter run and flow computers in the station cabinet. The name goes back to 1848, with a base in Wiesbaden, Germany, and the products are marketed today as Honeywell Elster. Seven Star LLC sources and supplies Elster ultrasonic flow meters, gas flow computers and station communication units for pipeline and utility operators in Oman.

Elster product families listed here

The Elster flow meter on this page is the Q.Sonic plus, a multipath ultrasonic gas meter for custody transfer measurement, listed together with a USM display unit. Flow computers come from two device series. The enCore series is represented by the enCore FC1 and the enCore ZM1. The gas-net series is represented by the gas-net F1 flow computer and the gas-net D2, a data forwarding unit for the DSfG station interface used in German-standard gas metering systems.

Where Elster gas metering equipment is used

Elster gas meters and flow computers work at transmission and distribution metering stations, city gate and pressure reduction stations, power plant and industrial fuel gas inlets, and gas storage sites. The flow computer converts measured volume to base conditions using pressure, temperature and gas quality data, records the fiscal archives and passes data to the SCADA system.

Ordering Elster meters and flow computers: what we need

For an ultrasonic meter: nominal size, pressure rating and flange standard, flow range, gas composition, operating pressure and temperature, the metrological approval required and the flow calibration expected. For a flow computer: device type, the serial number and software version of the existing unit, the I/O boards fitted, the meters and transmitters connected, the conversion and compressibility method (for example AGA 8) and the communication protocols. A photo of the type plate and the parameter printout shorten the check against the manufacturer's documentation considerably.
