Endress+Hauser FMR66B Micropilot Radar Level Sensor for Solids
Description
Endress+Hauser FMR66B 80 GHz radar for bulk solids in silos
The Endress+Hauser FMR66B is a Micropilot free-space radar for continuous, non-contact level measurement of powdered to granular bulk solids. It is a two-wire 4-20 mA HART transmitter working at about 80 GHz, offered with an encapsulated PVDF 40 mm antenna (30 m range) or a PTFE drip-off 50 mm antenna (50 m range), and mounted by thread, UNI flange or an adjustable mounting bracket. The measuring range is 50 m, process temperature –40 to +130 °C, and process pressure –1 to +16 bar, for the drip-off version on a thread.
Seven Star LLC, an independent supplier in Muscat, supplies the FMR66B in Oman and the GCC for cement, grain, sand, minerals and plastics silos. Because the radar never touches the product, the FMR66B avoids the cable stress and pulling loads that guided-wave probes face in tall silos. The sections below describe the FMR66B in detail and what we need for a quotation.

How the FMR66B handles dust and angled surfaces
The FMR66B emits a frequency-modulated radar signal and calculates the distance from the frequency difference between the sent and the received wave. The 80 GHz signal is narrow, so a 20 m distance is lit by a circle only about 2.1 m wide with the drip-off antenna, and silo walls, struts and nozzles contribute fewer interference echoes. Solids give weaker echoes than liquids and the surface forms cones when filled and craters when emptied, so the unit is optimized for bulk solids at delivery and accuracy figures are given for that mode. An alignment unit is available to aim the antenna at the product cone and extend the usable range in silos with conical outlets.
In applications with strong dust, the integrated purge air connection keeps the antenna from clogging. The datasheet also advises ending the measuring range about 10 mm before the antenna tip to protect against abrasive product and buildup, and the Heartbeat buildup detection can raise a warning before the antenna face is covered.

Where the FMR66B fits and related products
Endress+Hauser has two main ways to measure level in bulk solids: the Micropilot FMR66B, which is non-contact, and the Levelflex FMP57, which uses a rod or rope probe. The FMR66B is easier to retrofit through a single nozzle and has no moving or loaded parts in the silo; the FMP57 is the alternative when you would rather have a guided probe in the product than a free-space beam. For liquids the same 80 GHz series offers the FMR60B (thread) and FMR62B (flanged); the FMR43 and FMR63B serve hygienic needs. A weather protection cover and the adjustable mounting bracket for the FMR6xB series are accessories.
FMR66B selection and ordering checklist
- Bulk product, particle size, bulk density and dielectric constant (at least εr 1.6).
- Silo height, shape, cone angle and discharge type; location of the nozzle.
- Dust load, need for purge air, and condensation or buildup tendency.
- Antenna: PVDF 40 mm or PTFE drip-off 50 mm; thread, UNI flange or bracket.
- Process temperature and pressure, including cleaning or purge pressure.
- Alignment unit for sloped or conical product surfaces.
- Output set (one or two 4-20 mA, switch output), display, Bluetooth.
- Hazardous dust or gas approvals, SIL requirement.
FMR66B installation, commissioning and maintenance
Place the FMR66B at about one sixth of the silo diameter from the wall and never closer than 20 cm. Do not mount it in the silo center, where interference can cause signal loss, nor above the filling curtain. Keep the nozzle smooth, deburred and short enough for the diameter chosen, because a long nozzle reduces performance. Align the antenna axis perpendicular to the product surface. If an outdoor unit sits in direct sun or rain, fit the weather protection cover.
Commissioning takes place on the display, by HART or by Bluetooth, with an interference echo map. Check the antenna face at scheduled stops and clean any hard crust. For silos with a plastic roof or dielectric window, the datasheet gives guidance for external measurement through the cover for liquids and products with εr of 10 or more.
FMR66B applications in Oman and the GCC
In the Gulf, the FMR66B suits cement and clinker silos, grain terminals, sand and aggregate bins, gypsum and lime silos, and plastic granule storage at petrochemical plants. The air is hot and dusty, silo surfaces see strong sun, and nights can bring condensation, so purge air, the weather cover and the IP66/68 housing are worth specifying. For mixed-use sites where ambient is very high, check the derating curve for ambient against process temperature in the datasheet.

Where Endress+Hauser instruments are used
In Oman and the GCC, Endress+Hauser instruments are common in oil and gas production and processing, refineries and petrochemicals, desalination and water networks, wastewater treatment, power plants and food and beverage plants. Coriolis meters measure hydrocarbon and chemical flows, electromagnetic meters cover water and wastewater, radar transmitters handle tank and silo level, and Liquiline analysers monitor water quality. Proline 300 and 500 flowmeters include Heartbeat Technology for in-situ verification, which reduces the need to remove a meter for checks.
Ordering Endress+Hauser instruments: what we need
The order code on the nameplate (for example PMP71-1QA1S11RDADU) defines every option: measuring range, process connection, materials, output, approvals and display. Send it with the serial number; Endress+Hauser can retrieve the original configuration from the serial number. For a new instrument add the medium, operating and design pressure and temperature, range, line size or tank geometry, process connection, wetted materials, output or protocol (4-20 mA HART, PROFIBUS, FOUNDATION Fieldbus, Modbus) and the hazardous-area approval required. Older models such as Promass 80/83 or Micropilot M are replaced by current Proline or 80 GHz Micropilot devices.

FAQ
Questions about the Endress+Hauser FMR66B Micropilot Radar Level Sensor
Answers from our engineering team on installation, compatibility and integration.
01What is the Endress+Hauser FMR66B for?
The FMR66B is an 80 GHz non-contact radar transmitter for continuous level in powdered to granular bulk solids such as cement, grain, sand and plastic granules, with 4-20 mA HART output.
02What range does the FMR66B offer?
The encapsulated PVDF 40 mm antenna reaches 30 m and the PTFE drip-off 50 mm antenna reaches 50 m. The usable range depends on the dielectric constant and on the silo conditions.
03What accuracy does the FMR66B have on solids?
Accuracy is plus or minus 3 mm for measuring distances above 1.5 m, and up to plus or minus 20 mm closer than 1.5 m, under reference conditions optimized for bulk solids.
04How does the FMR66B cope with dust?
It has an integrated purge air connection for strong dust emission, a narrow beam that reduces wall echoes, and buildup detection among its Heartbeat functions.
05What dielectric constant does the FMR66B need?
Bulk solids must have a relative permittivity of 1.6 or higher. For lower values the datasheet asks you to contact the manufacturer.
