Handheld air plasma and mechanized plasma cutting systems

Air plasma units run from compressed air and a single power source. They are used for cutting plate, pipe and sections by hand, for gouging out welds and defects, and on small cutting tables or pipe cutting rigs with a machine torch. Mechanized systems are a different class of equipment. They work with a CNC table, a torch height control and a gas console, and use oxygen, nitrogen or other gas combinations to get a squarer edge and a narrower kerf on each material.

How to size a plasma cutter

Manufacturers quote several thickness figures. The recommended or production cut thickness is the one to use for daily work. Severance thickness is the most the unit can part with a slow, rough cut, and pierce capacity, which matters on a table, is lower than edge-start capacity. Choose on the thickness you cut most of the time. Then check the duty cycle at that output, the input supply, and the compressed air flow, pressure and dryness the unit needs. Wet or oily air shortens consumable life quickly, a common problem in humid GCC coastal workshops.

What to send for a plasma system quotation

Tell us the materials and thickness range, handheld or mechanized use, the site supply voltage and phase, the torch lead length, and for table systems the CNC and height control in use. Add the consumables you want in the first order.

What to include in your inquiry

These details let us quote the right item the first time.

  • Welding process (MIG/MAG, TIG, MMA, SAW, plasma)
  • Current range and duty cycle
  • Supply voltage and phases
  • Material and thickness to be welded
  • Accessories needed (torch, wire feeder, cooler)

Missing some of them? Send what you have. A nameplate photo or an old part number is enough to start.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between rated cut capacity and severance thickness?
Rated or recommended capacity is the thickness the system cuts at a productive speed with a good edge. Severance is the maximum thickness it can get through at very low speed, leaving a rough edge that needs heavy cleanup. For daily production work, choose a system whose recommended capacity matches your usual thickness, and treat severance as an occasional reserve.
Plasma or oxy-fuel: which should I use?
Plasma cuts any conductive metal and is much faster than oxy-fuel on thin and medium carbon steel, with a smaller heat-affected zone. Oxy-fuel only cuts carbon and low-alloy steel, but it has almost no upper thickness limit, needs no electricity and costs little to set up. Many workshops keep both, using oxy-fuel for very thick plate.
What compressed air quality does an air plasma cutter need?
The air must be dry, free of oil and delivered at the flow and pressure in the manual, measured while the torch is cutting. Moisture and oil cause unstable arcs and rapid wear of electrodes and nozzles. A filter and dryer close to the machine is normal practice. Bottled nitrogen is an alternative where clean air is not available.
Can a handheld plasma unit be used on a CNC table?
Many portable systems accept a machine torch and have an interface for start signal and arc voltage, which is what a CNC and torch height control need. Whether a given model has this as standard or as an option must be checked in the manufacturer documentation. Edge quality will not match a dedicated mechanized system with a gas console.
What should I send to get a plasma cutting system quoted?
Materials, the thickness you cut daily and the maximum you cut occasionally, and whether the torch is handheld or machine mounted. Add supply voltage and phase, lead length, and for mechanized use the table size, CNC make and height control. If you are replacing an older unit, send its model so torch and consumable compatibility can be checked.
