Elster enCore FC1 Flow Computer – Honeywell Oil & Gas

Description

Overview

The Elster enCore FC1 is a high performance flow computer for oil and gas measurement applications, designed for gas and liquid measurement duties and the corresponding calculation algorithms. The name enCore, meaning Honeywell Elster new Core, refers to the backbone of the FC1 which carries the basic functionalities. A modular software system made of independent application function blocks (AFBs) turns the FC1 into a reliable, secure and high performance flow computer, and the same modularity in hardware means the widest range of applications can be covered.

The FC1 supports liquid measurement, PID control, turbine lubrication monitoring and soft PLC functions as application modules, widening its use from gas metering to station control. The enCore FC1 is a field-proven platform with a large installed base in gas metering stations

Engineering and Design

The enCore FC1 implements the widest range of calculation algorithms pursuant to AGA, ISO and API standards to fulfil all requested flow conversion requirements on natural gas and liquid streams. Multi-stream functionality and advanced logging properties are available, and the user-definable logging feature can use any desired amount of flash memory, so there are no restrictions in logging depth. By using cryptographic mechanisms, the unit can be securely updated and upgraded, even in a fiscal way.

Two housing sizes are offered: a one-third design width of 19 inches and a one-half design width of 19 inches, which differ in the number of I/O and communications boards (4 board slots versus 7 board slots). Input boards with integrated Ex-barriers allow small stations to be equipped with a high-end flow computer. The MFE7 input board provides PT100 inputs, 4-20 mA or HART inputs for up to four transmitters, digital pulse and status inputs and an RS485 channel, while the MFA8 output board provides digital and 0/4-20 mA analogue outputs. Predesigned device drivers connect analyzers, ultrasonic meters and transmitters, and the PC software offers Normal mode and Expert mode configuration.

The FC1 supports liquid measurement, PID control, turbine lubrication monitoring and soft PLC functions as application modules, widening its use from gas metering to station control. With its predesigned device drivers the FC1 connects to analyzers, ultrasonic meters and transmitters directly, and the service interface allows secure remote access for configuration and diagnostic work. The FC1 hardware can be ordered with integrated Ex barriers for small stations, reducing cabinet complexity, and the USB front panel port gives service engineers a fast configuration path at the site without opening the cabinet.

Hardware Platform and Display

Honeywell describes the enCore FC1 as a 19 in design, 3U high, available in 1/3 or 1/2 width with a depth of 170 mm. The front carries a 4.3 in full-colour wide screen (480 × 272 px) with LED backlight and touch screen. The unit is powered from 24 V DC ±20%, with a typical consumption of 5 W and a maximum of 12 W, and the specified ambient temperature range is -20 to +50 °C.

The input and output boards are selected per application. ExMFE5 provides five multifunctional inputs with integrated Ex protection, MFE7 provides seven (PT100, 4-20 mA/HART, digital and RS485), and MFA8 provides eight multifunctional outputs (LF/status digital and 0/4 to 20 mA analogue). The ESER4 communication board offers three serial channels and one Ethernet port. Ethernet protocols are MMS, Modbus and NTP; serial protocols include Modbus (ASCII, RTU), Uniform, Encoder and Printer.

About brand
Gas measurement stations are the home ground of Elster: ultrasonic gas meters in the meter run and flow computers in the station cabinet. The name goes back to 1848, with a base in Wiesbaden, Germany, and the products are marketed today as Honeywell Elster. Seven Star LLC sources and supplies Elster ultrasonic flow meters, gas flow computers and station communication units for pipeline and utility operators in Oman.

Elster product families listed here

The Elster flow meter on this page is the Q.Sonic plus, a multipath ultrasonic gas meter for custody transfer measurement, listed together with a USM display unit. Flow computers come from two device series. The enCore series is represented by the enCore FC1 and the enCore ZM1. The gas-net series is represented by the gas-net F1 flow computer and the gas-net D2, a data forwarding unit for the DSfG station interface used in German-standard gas metering systems.

Where Elster gas metering equipment is used

Elster gas meters and flow computers work at transmission and distribution metering stations, city gate and pressure reduction stations, power plant and industrial fuel gas inlets, and gas storage sites. The flow computer converts measured volume to base conditions using pressure, temperature and gas quality data, records the fiscal archives and passes data to the SCADA system. Operators in the GCC meet this equipment mainly on fiscal and allocation metering skids.

Ordering Elster meters and flow computers: what we need

For an ultrasonic meter: nominal size, pressure rating and flange standard, flow range, gas composition, operating pressure and temperature, the metrological approval required and the flow calibration expected. For a flow computer: device type, the serial number and software version of the existing unit, the I/O boards fitted, the meters and transmitters connected, the conversion and compressibility method (for example AGA 8) and the communication protocols. A photo of the type plate and the parameter printout shorten the check against the manufacturer's documentation considerably.
