About Check Valves

Types of check valve in this category
Instrument check valves such as the Swagelok CH, C and CO series use a spring-loaded poppet with set cracking pressures for tubing systems, sample lines and gas panels. Dual-plate wafer check valves, including the Bray and EBRO ranges, fit between flanges and close quickly with spring-loaded plates, which reduces slam on pump discharges. Swing check valves suit low-velocity water and wastewater lines, while silent and nozzle check valves close before flow reverses on high-head pumping systems. Cla-Val pump control and check valves serve water networks, and Spirax Sarco disc check valves are compact and widely used on steam and condensate lines.
How to select a check valve
Choose the design from the line size, flow velocity and the risk of water hammer. Check the cracking pressure for instrument valves, and the minimum flow to keep the disc fully open for line valves, since a partly open disc chatters and wears. Confirm the pressure class, end connection, materials and seal type for the fluid and temperature, and the installation orientation, because some designs work only horizontally or with upward flow.

What is the cracking pressure of a check valve?
It is the upstream pressure at which the valve starts to open. Instrument check valves are offered with several fixed cracking pressures; choose one that opens reliably but prevents unwanted flow.
Why does a check valve slam?
When a pump stops, flow decelerates and reverses. A valve that closes slowly lets reverse flow build up, and the sudden closure causes a pressure surge. Spring-assisted dual-plate, silent and nozzle check valves close faster and reduce slam.
Can check valves be installed vertically?
Many can with upward flow, but not all designs work in every orientation. Swing check valves in particular have limits; check the manufacturer data.
Do check valves give tight shut-off?
Soft-seated valves seal well, but a check valve is not an isolation valve. Use a separate isolation valve where zero leakage is needed for maintenance.
