Miller Maxstar 400 DC TIG/Stick Welding Power Source Supplied by Seven Star LLC

Stick (MMA) Welding Machines

Stick (MMA) welding machines are constant-current power sources for covered electrodes, also known as SMAW or arc welders. Seven Star LLC lists four stick welders for buyers in Oman, from Kemppi and Miller: a portable unit for maintenance work, a high-output machine for heavy site use, and two DC inverters that also run TIG. The range is growing, and other models from these manufacturers can be sourced on request.

What matters in an MMA welding machine

The output current has to suit the largest electrode diameter you use, at a duty cycle that matches the work. Hot start gives a short current boost so the electrode strikes cleanly, and arc force raises the current when the arc is held short, which stops the electrode from sticking. Cellulosic pipeline electrodes need a power source with enough arc voltage, so check that the manufacturer states the model is suitable for them. Some site safety rules in the GCC ask for a voltage reduction device, which lowers the open-circuit voltage while the machine is idle. If carbon arc gouging is planned, the machine must be rated for it.

Data to send for a stick welder quotation

Send the electrode types and diameters, the site supply or generator rating, the welding cable lengths and any need for a remote control, a voltage reduction device or TIG capability. We check the configuration against the manufacturer documentation before quoting.

What to include in your inquiry

These details let us quote the right item the first time.

  • Welding process (MIG/MAG, TIG, MMA, SAW, plasma)
  • Current range and duty cycle
  • Supply voltage and phases
  • Material and thickness to be welded
  • Accessories needed (torch, wire feeder, cooler)

Missing some of them? Send what you have. A nameplate photo or an old part number is enough to start.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are MMA, SMAW and stick welding the same thing?
Yes. Manual metal arc (MMA) is the European term, shielded metal arc welding (SMAW) is the American one, and stick welding is the workshop name. All describe welding with a flux-covered consumable electrode on a constant-current power source. A machine sold under any of these names does the same job, so compare them on output, duty cycle and arc controls.
What do hot start and arc force do?
Hot start adds extra current for a moment at ignition so the electrode lights without sticking and the start of the bead fuses properly. Arc force, sometimes called dig, increases current when the arc voltage drops because the welder is holding a tight arc. Low settings suit rutile and smooth low-hydrogen work, higher settings suit cellulosic and root passes.
Can every stick machine run cellulosic electrodes such as E6010?
No. Cellulosic electrodes need a high arc voltage and a power source whose output characteristic keeps the arc alive when the arc length changes. Many light inverters will strike them but cannot hold a stable arc. Choose a model whose manufacturer documentation states suitability for cellulosic electrodes, often through a selectable arc mode.
What is a voltage reduction device and when is it needed?
A voltage reduction device (VRD) cuts the open-circuit voltage at the electrode holder to a low level whenever no arc is burning, and restores full output when the electrode touches the work. It lowers the risk of electric shock in wet, hot or confined conditions. Several owner and contractor safety standards require it, so check your site rules before ordering.
What information do you need to quote a stick welding machine?
The electrode classifications and diameters, the current you expect to weld at and for how long, the supply voltage and phase or the generator size, and the cable lengths. Say whether gouging, TIG, a remote control or a VRD is needed. If the machine will run from long supply leads on a construction site, mention that as well.
