Honeywell Searchline Excel Open Path Infrared Gas Detector
Overview
Honeywell Searchline Excel is the world’s best-selling open path infrared gas detector, with more than 6,000 units installed across oil and gas, petrochemical, and marine facilities worldwide. It continuously monitors flammable hydrocarbon vapors along a straight-line path between a transmitter and receiver, providing area-wide leak detection across large storage yards, process units, and perimeter zones where conventional point detectors would require dozens of individual sensors to achieve equivalent coverage.
In Oman and the GCC, Seven Star LLC proudly supplies the Searchline Excel open path gas detector to oil and gas, petrochemical, and marine operators across Oman and the wider GCC. Every unit is Honeywell Analytics hardware, supplied with manufacturer documentation and local technical assistance from our instrumentation division.
Measurement Principle
The Honeywell Searchline Excel operates on the open path infrared absorption principle: an infrared transmitter projects a modulated beam across the monitored path to a receiver unit, and any hydrocarbon gas cloud crossing that path absorbs infrared energy at wavelengths characteristic of hydrocarbon molecular bonds. The receiver continuously compares absorption at the measurement wavelength against a reference wavelength unaffected by hydrocarbons, and the resulting differential signal is processed into a gas concentration reading expressed in LEL-meters, the product of gas concentration and path length.
A patented double band pass filter compensates for atmospheric interference from fog, rain, and mist, while coaxial optics keep the transmitted and received beams aligned along the same physical axis, giving the detector exceptional resilience to partial beam obscuration. Because detection relies purely on optical absorption with no moving parts, no consumable sensor element, and no direct physical contact with the gas cloud, the Searchline Excel delivers a T90 response of under three seconds and years of stable operation without the sensor drift and periodic replacement inherent to catalytic or electrochemical point detectors.
Engineering Design of the Honeywell Searchline Excel
The Honeywell Searchline Excel transmitter and receiver units are housed in 316 stainless steel enclosures rated IP66/IP67, engineered to withstand the corrosive, high-humidity conditions typical of offshore platforms, FPSOs, and coastal petrochemical sites across the Gulf. An alignment-free optical design and generous misalignment tolerance simplify commissioning on structures subject to thermal expansion, vibration, and minor structural movement, reducing the on-site adjustment time normally associated with open path instruments.
Field wiring terminates in a dedicated junction compartment isolated from the optical assembly, and the detector is available in short, medium, and long range configurations covering path lengths from 5 meters to 200 meters, so a single product family can be specified across small process skids and large tank farm perimeters alike. Contamination-resistant optics and 100 percent solar immunity mean the units continue reporting accurately even when exposed to direct desert sunlight, flare radiation, arc welding, or lightning activity, conditions that are common cause of false alarms in lesser open path designs.
Key Features
The Honeywell Searchline Excel is the Honeywell Searchline Excel detector line, combining proven optical performance with a rugged mechanical build suited to demanding hydrocarbon facilities:
- 100 percent solar immune operation, unaffected by sunlight, flare stack radiation, arc welding, or lightning interference.
- Patented double band pass filter fully compensates for fog, rain, and mist without generating false alarms.
- Coaxial optics deliver best-in-class resilience to partial beam obscuration and misalignment.
- Fast response with T90 under 3 seconds across the full 0 to 5 LEL.m measuring range.
- Alignment-free installation with wide misalignment tolerance simplifies commissioning on moving structures.
- Short, medium, and long range models cover path lengths from 5 meters to 200 meters.
- 316 stainless steel, IP66/IP67-rated enclosure suited to offshore and coastal atmospheres.
- FM, ATEX, IECEx, CSA, and ABS marine type-approved for global hazardous area and marine deployment.
Industrial Applications
The Honeywell Searchline Excel from Honeywell Searchline Excel is widely deployed for perimeter and area-wide hydrocarbon leak detection across downstream chemical processing plants, gas transmission and pipeline metering stations, large tank storage terminals, and offshore platforms and FPSO vessels, where a single beam can economically replace a large array of point detectors along fence lines, jetties, and process unit boundaries. Its resistance to weather interference and solar radiation makes it particularly well suited to the intense sunlight, dust, and seasonal humidity swings experienced across the Arabian Gulf and Arabian Sea coastlines.
In Oman and the GCC, Seven Star LLC distributes the Searchline Excel to refineries, LNG terminals, offshore operators, and industrial estates across Oman and the GCC, including installations within the Sohar and Salalah economic zones and Duqm. Local technical support and Honeywell Analytics spares supplied on request help operators maintain continuous perimeter gas surveillance in line with HSE and process-safety compliance requirements.

The FS24X Plus is a triple infrared flame detector. Replacement cells such as the SR-X2V oxygen sensor and the SR-W-MP75C MICROpeL combustible sensor are also listed. Process instruments include SmartLine STG700 and STG800 gauge pressure transmitters, the STR82D remote seal transmitter and the VersaFlow Coriolis mass flow meter. Recorder consumables such as chart pens are also sourced.Where Honeywell detectors and transmitters are used
Gas and flame detectors guard wellheads, compressor stations, tank farms, loading bays, process units and utility buildings, and report to the fire and gas system. Open path units watch plant boundaries and long pipe racks. SmartLine transmitters and VersaFlow meters measure pressure and flow in refining, gas processing, chemicals and power.Ordering Honeywell gas detection parts: what we need
