Typical gas analysis duties in oil, gas and power plants
Natural gas processing and transmission need heating value, H2S, total sulfur, CO2, water dew point and hydrocarbon dew point measured against the sales gas specification. Sulfur recovery units are controlled from the ratio of H2S to SO2 in the tail gas. Fired heaters, boilers and furnaces use oxygen and combustibles measurement for combustion control. Air separation, inert gas blanketing and high-purity gas supply require trace oxygen and trace moisture analysis. Portable analyzers are used for spot checks and for verifying fixed instruments.

What is the difference between a gas analyzer and a gas detector?
A gas analyzer measures the concentration of a component inside a process stream, for control or quality purposes, and is selected for accuracy in a known background gas. A gas detector monitors the ambient air for a flammable or toxic leak or for oxygen deficiency and raises an alarm to protect people and plant. They are different instruments built to different standards, so tell us which duty you have.
When is a tunable diode laser analyzer a better choice than an infrared analyzer?
A TDL analyzer scans a single narrow absorption line of the target gas, which gives high selectivity and a fast response, and it can measure in situ across a duct or in an extractive cell. Non-dispersive infrared analyzers use a broader band, are well proven for CO, CO2 and methane in conditioned samples, and are a common choice in multi-component extractive systems. Background gases and required response time decide between them.
Which analyzers are needed to check natural gas quality?
A typical sales gas metering or processing station has a gas chromatograph for composition and heating value, an H2S or total sulfur analyzer, a moisture or water dew point analyzer and often a hydrocarbon dew point analyzer. CO2 and oxygen may be added. The exact list and the methods are set by the gas sales agreement or pipeline specification, so send that table with the inquiry.
Can you supply parts for a gas analyzer that is already installed?
Yes, by manufacturer part number. Send the part number and description with the analyzer model and serial number. We verify the number in the manufacturer documentation, check if it has been superseded and offer the current part. This applies to chromatograph valves, detectors and heaters as well as to oxygen cells, moisture sensors and electronic boards.
What do you need from me to quote a continuous process gas analyzer?
The component to be measured and its range, the full composition of the stream including water, sulfur compounds and particulates, sample pressure and temperature, area classification, ambient temperature, outputs, power supply and any specification or standard the measurement must follow.
