Explosion-proof CCTV cameras

An explosion-proof camera places the camera module, lens and electronics in a flameproof housing so that it can be used where flammable gas or dust may be present. A PTZ (pan, tilt, zoom) model lets the control room operator steer the camera and zoom in on a flare tip, loading arm, wellhead, tank roof or compressor deck without sending a person into the area. Fixed cameras watch a single view such as a gate or a gauge. Housings for coastal and offshore sites in the GCC are commonly made of stainless steel to resist salt corrosion, and a wiper or sunshield is a typical option.

Points to specify for a hazardous-area camera

State the zone, gas group and temperature class of the location and the certification scheme your project accepts, ATEX or IECEx. Then define the image side: resolution, optical zoom, low-light or infrared needs, and the video standard used by your video management system, for example ONVIF-compliant IP streaming. Finally give the supply voltage, the network connection (copper or fiber), the cable entries and the mounting bracket type.

What to include in your inquiry

These details let us quote the right item the first time.

  • Full part number or order code
  • Hardware and firmware revision, when replacing a part
  • Control system or PLC family it must work with
  • New installation or replacement of an obsolete part
  • Quantity and required delivery date

Missing some of them? Send what you have. A nameplate photo or an old part number is enough to start.

Frequently Asked Questions

What certification should an explosion-proof camera have?
The camera needs an Ex certificate that covers the zone, gas or dust group and temperature class of the mounting location, and an ambient temperature range that includes site conditions. Most projects in the region ask for IECEx, ATEX or both. On request we provide the manufacturer's datasheet and the certificates the manufacturer issues, so your HSE team can verify the marking before purchase.
PTZ or fixed camera for a process area?
A fixed camera gives a constant view and a continuous record of one scene, which suits gates, gauges and flare monitoring. A PTZ camera covers a large area and lets the operator investigate an alarm, but it only records where it is pointing. Many sites combine them: fixed cameras for permanent coverage and one PTZ unit per area for inspection.
Will the camera work with our existing video management system?
IP cameras that conform to the ONVIF profiles can normally be added to any video management system that supports the same profile, with basic functions such as streaming and PTZ control. Advanced functions may need a manufacturer-specific driver. Tell us the make and version of your system and the compression format it uses, and we check the camera's compatibility information from the manufacturer.
Why are stainless steel housings used for hazardous-area cameras?
Stainless steel, commonly grade 316L, withstands salt-laden air, humidity and many process chemicals far better than painted aluminum, which matters on offshore platforms, jetties and coastal plants. It also keeps the flameproof joints of the housing from corroding, which is part of the explosion protection. Aluminum housings are lighter and can be acceptable inland. Follow your project's material specification.
What information is needed to quote an explosion-proof camera?
Area classification (zone, gas group, temperature class), required certificates, fixed or PTZ type, resolution and zoom, day and night performance, housing material, supply voltage, network interface, cable gland thread and number of entries, and mounting (wall, pole or ceiling). Add accessories such as wiper, washer tank, sunshield or junction box, and the quantity for each camera position.
