Honeywell OmniPoint Multi-Sensor Fixed Gas Detector

Description

Overview

The Honeywell OmniPoint is a gas transmitter designed to operate in hazardous locations and to support multiple sensors for the detection of toxic, oxygen and flammable gas hazards. Instead of installing a separate transmitter for every gas, one OmniPoint unit can serve up to three sensors simultaneously, each with its own fully configurable 4-20 mA channel. Honeywell combines this with HART 7 communication, optional Modbus RTU and Bluetooth 5.0 modules, a 3 inch full-colour TFT display and a wide operating temperature range of –55 to 75 °C, making it a modern platform for process plants and oil and gas facilities.

Seven Star LLC supplies the Honeywell OmniPoint to oil and gas operators, refineries, petrochemical plants and EPC contractors in the Sultanate of Oman and the GCC. Multi-gas points are common in Oman: H2S plus LEL around sour gas wells and gathering stations, oxygen plus toxic gas in analyser houses, and ammonia or chlorine in utilities. With engineering support in Muscat, our team helps choose the sensor cartridges, enclosure material and communication modules for each detection point and checks the current certification status for the project.

Measurement Principle

The Honeywell OmniPoint works with two families of sensor modules. XPIS sensor modules use electrochemical cells for ammonia, carbon monoxide, chlorine, hydrogen sulphide, oxygen and sulphur dioxide; in general terms these cells generate a current proportional to the concentration of the target gas. XP sensor modules use catalytic bead sensors for flammable gases or infrared sensors for methane and propane, measuring in %LEL. Both XPIS and XP sensor modules can be wired up to 300 m from the transmitter with two-wire cable, and the transmitter can also accept an Optima point infrared detector.

For each sensor the Honeywell OmniPoint applies configurable alarm levels and drives its outputs. The default current output scheme uses 1.0 mA for fault, 2.0 mA for warm-up and inhibit, 3.0 mA for warning, 4.0 to 20.0 mA for normal measurement and 21.0 mA for maximum over range, with ±1% full-scale signal accuracy. The transmitter automatically detects whether it should operate in current sink or current source mode, and an isolated mode is also supported. This allows the same unit to connect to many types of safety PLC or fire and gas panel.

Engineering Design of the Honeywell OmniPoint

The Honeywell OmniPoint enclosure is five-coat marine-finish painted aluminium alloy or 316 stainless steel. With the display module the transmitter weighs about 2.78 kg in aluminium or 5.70 kg in stainless steel; an XPIS sensor module with cartridge adds 0.80 kg and an XP module 0.69 kg. Four conduit or cable entries (M25 or 3/4 inch NPT) are provided for wiring and sensors, plus one M22 top entry for the optional Bluetooth antenna. The unit can be mounted on flat walls or, with the optional kit, on pipes from 2 to 6 inches in diameter. Ingress protection is IP66/IP67 to IEC/EN 60529 and NEMA 4X.

The user interface of the Honeywell OmniPoint is a 3 inch circular high-resolution colour display with four capacitive touch keys and an LED ring: green for normal operation, red for alarm, yellow for fault or warning and blue for wireless communication. The display shows five-digit readings with units and an alarm snapshot with gas trend. Three fully configurable alarm relays and one normally energised fault relay are rated up to 240 V AC, 5 A. Input voltage is 12 to 32 V DC for catalytic, IR and XPIS sensors and 18 to 32 V DC with Optima, with transmitter consumption of 4.5 W normal and 8.5 W maximum.

Key Features

Key features of the Honeywell OmniPoint from the Honeywell technical specifications are summarised below.

  • One transmitter supports up to three sensors at the same time for toxic, oxygen and flammable gases.
  • Three fully configurable 4-20 mA channels operate in sink, source or isolated modes.
  • HART 7 communication on the first channel supports point-to-point or multi-drop operation with up to 8 devices.
  • An optional isolated Modbus RTU module connects the unit to RS-485 networks with addresses 1 to 247.
  • An optional Bluetooth 5.0 module enables remote zero and span calibration and configuration from a smartphone.
  • The 3 inch full-colour display and LED status ring make detector status visible at a glance.
  • Operating temperature extends from –55 to 75 °C, with IP66/IP67 and NEMA 4X protection.
  • Honeywell lists a 5-year warranty for the transmitter unit and up to 3 years for many sensor cartridges.

Industrial Applications

The Honeywell OmniPoint suits applications where several gas hazards exist at the same location: wellpads and gathering stations with H2S and methane, gas compression and processing plants, refinery process units, tank farms and loading facilities, chemical plants that handle ammonia or chlorine, and water treatment works. Using one transmitter for multiple sensors reduces the number of field devices, cable runs and panel inputs, which helps on brownfield upgrades in Oman where cable trays and junction boxes are already crowded.

Seven Star LLC supplies the Honeywell OmniPoint with other Honeywell detection products such as the Honeywell XNX Excel gas detector, the Honeywell Searchline Excel Plus open path detector and the Honeywell Sensepoint XRL fixed gas detector. Our engineering team in Muscat supports projects across Oman and the GCC with detector selection and replacement planning.

About brand

Fixed gas and flame detection takes up the largest share of our Honeywell listing: Searchline Excel open path detectors, Sensepoint XCD and XRL point detectors, the XNX transmitter and the FS24X Plus flame detector. Honeywell, which dates from 1906 and is headquartered in Charlotte, USA, also makes SmartLine pressure transmitters and VersaFlow flowmeters for process plants.

Seven Star LLC is an independent supplier of Honeywell gas detectors, replacement sensors, transmitters and controller parts for sites in Oman and the GCC.

Honeywell product families on this page

Open path infrared detection is represented by the Searchline Excel and the newer Searchline Excel Plus. Point detection includes the Sensepoint XCD in flammable and toxic versions, for example the SPXCDALMG1 hydrogen detector, the Sensepoint XRL and the XNX universal transmitter. The FS24X Plus is a triple infrared flame detector. Replacement cells such as the SR-X2V oxygen sensor and the SR-W-MP75C MICROpeL combustible sensor are also listed. Process instruments include SmartLine STG700 and STG800 gauge pressure transmitters, the STR82D remote seal transmitter and the VersaFlow Coriolis mass flow meter. Recorder consumables such as chart pens are also sourced.

Where Honeywell detectors and transmitters are used

Gas and flame detectors guard wellheads, compressor stations, tank farms, loading bays, process units and utility buildings, and report to the fire and gas system. Open path units watch plant boundaries and long pipe racks. SmartLine transmitters and VersaFlow meters measure pressure and flow in refining, gas processing, chemicals and power.

Ordering Honeywell gas detection parts: what we need

Send the full part number from the label, such as SPXCDALMG1 or 02104-N-XSSA, and the serial number. For gas detectors state the target gas and measuring span, housing material, cable entry thread, output (4-20 mA, relays, Modbus) and the approval required.
