Operating Principle

The Honeywell 02104-N-XSSA operates on the infrared open-path absorption principle. The transmitter unit projects an infrared beam across the protected area to the receiver unit; flammable hydrocarbon gases absorb infrared energy at specific wavelengths, so when a gas cloud crosses the beam path, the receiver detects a proportional reduction in received signal strength. The system’s electronics convert this absorption into an LEL-metre (LEL.m) reading, giving operators a direct indication of both gas concentration and cloud size across the full monitored path rather than a single-point reading.

Short, Medium and Long Range Versions

Searchline Excel is built in three path-length versions and the choice is fixed at the time of order. Short range covers 5 to 40 m, medium range 40 to 120 m and long range 120 to 200 m, so the transmitter and receiver of a short range system must be installed between 5 and 40 m apart; a longer gap needs a medium or long range kit. The short range transmitter is the lighter unit at 3.5 kg and draws 3.5 W, against 7 kg and 10 W for the medium and long range transmitters.

All three versions share the same measuring range of 0 to 5 LEL.m, a T90 below 3 seconds and a misalignment tolerance of ±0.5 degrees, which corresponds to roughly 35 cm of movement at 40 m. That tolerance is the reason for rigid mounting: both units need a stable structure that does not sway or twist. Warm-up takes less than 5 minutes to become operational and less than 1 hour to be fully stabilised. The detector works from 18 to 32 VDC and is rated IP66 and IP67 in 316 stainless steel.

Signal States, Alignment and Accessories

On the 4-20 mA output the detector reports more than the gas reading. Normal operation spans 4 to 20 mA for 0 to 5 LEL.m, 21 mA signals over-range, 3 mA dirty optics, 2.5 mA a blocked beam and 0 mA a fault; the dirty optics, beam block and fault levels are user programmable. The maximum loop resistance is 600 Ω and both source and sink versions exist. With the XNX Universal Transmitter the system gains a local display, a local HART port and HART over 4-20 mA as standard, with Modbus available as an XNX option.
