About Compressors

Rotary screw air compressors
Oil-injected screw compressors, also called oil-flooded, supply plant air and, with the right dryers and filters, instrument air. The first decision is fixed speed or variable speed drive. A variable speed machine follows a fluctuating demand and avoids long unloaded running, while a fixed speed machine suits a steady base load. Sizing is by air flow at the working pressure, with allowance for the high inlet temperatures found in the GCC.
Scroll and semi-hermetic refrigeration compressors
Copeland scroll compressors are used in air conditioning and chiller circuits, and semi-hermetic reciprocating models in commercial and industrial refrigeration. The full model code identifies the displacement, the motor version and the electrical supply, so a replacement should be ordered from the complete nameplate designation. Refrigerant and oil type must match the existing system, since mineral and polyolester oils are not freely interchangeable.
Spare parts for process compressors
Parts for Kobelco screw compressors and Nuovo Pignone machines are ordered by the manufacturer’s part number together with the machine serial number, because rotors, seals and bearings are specific to each casing and stage. Inspection kits bundle the gaskets, O-rings and wear parts called for in the maintenance manual at a given interval.

For an air compressor: flow, pressure, voltage, frequency, air or water cooling and drive type. For a refrigeration compressor: model code, refrigerant and voltage. For spares: part number, machine serial number and, where available, the item number from the sectional drawing. What is the difference between a scroll and a semi-hermetic reciprocating compressor?
A scroll compressor is a welded hermetic unit with few moving parts. It is compact and quiet, and it is replaced as a whole when it fails. A semi-hermetic reciprocating compressor has a bolted casing, so valve plates, pistons and the motor can be reached for repair. Scrolls dominate air conditioning and small chillers. Semi-hermetic machines are common in larger and lower-temperature refrigeration.
Can an obsolete Copeland compressor be replaced by a current model?
In most cases the manufacturer names a successor. Before accepting it, compare the capacity at your evaporating and condensing temperatures, the refrigerants approved for the new model, the suction and discharge connection sizes, the mounting footprint and the electrical data. Send us the full nameplate designation and the refrigerant, and we will check the manufacturer documentation for the recommended replacement.
When is an oil-free compressor required instead of an oil-injected one?
An oil-injected screw compressor with coalescing filters delivers air that is clean enough for general plant use and for most instrument air systems. Oil-free machines are specified where any risk of oil contact with the product is unacceptable, as in food, pharmaceutical and some electronics processes, and where the specification calls for ISO 8573-1 Class 0. State the air quality class in the inquiry.
Why is the machine serial number needed for a Kobelco or Nuovo Pignone part?
Process compressors are built to order. Two machines of the same model can have different rotor profiles, seal arrangements, materials and stage configurations depending on the gas and the duty. The serial number links the part to the as-built parts list for that machine. A part number on its own may also have been revised, and the serial number lets us confirm the current revision.
How does a hot climate affect air compressor selection?
Warm inlet air is less dense, so the mass of air compressed falls as ambient temperature rises. Oil and air coolers must be sized for the highest site temperature, and many manufacturers offer a high-ambient version for that reason. The dryer is affected too, because its capacity depends on the temperature of the air entering it. Always state the maximum ambient temperature and the site altitude.
