Rosemount 3490 Controller for Level, Pump and Flow

Description

Rosemount 3490 Controller: field controller for level, pumps and open channel flow

The Rosemount 3490 Controller is a field-mounted controller that reads one or two 4-20 mA or HART transmitters and turns the signals into control actions, totalised values and logged data. It was developed for water and wastewater work and is designed to accompany the Rosemount 1208 level and flow transmitters, but it accepts any 4-20 mA or HART device, so it is also used for general tank and sump duties.

Seven Star LLC supplies the Rosemount 3490 Controller in Oman and the GCC as an independent supplier in Muscat. Two input and output variants exist, so the model code decides what you actually receive.

Rosemount 3490 model code and the A and C variants

The datasheet example code is 3490 C S M P KL 00 0 0 01 MP WP. The main choice is the Inputs and outputs letter.

Feature Code A Code C
Sensor inputs (4-20 mA / HART) 1 2
Digital inputs 2 4
Analog outputs (4-20 mA) 1 3
Relay outputs 3 6
Ethernet 1 1
Level and pump control Yes Yes
Open channel flow Yes Yes
Differential level No Yes

The remaining fields are application S (standard), host communication M (Modbus TCP), housing P (engineered polymer), hazardous location NA or KL (ATEX, IECEx, US and Canada intrinsically safe sensor inputs), and cable connection codes 01, 02 or 03. The additional options are MP for the wall and pipe installation kit and WP for the weather protection cover.

How the Rosemount 3490 wizards and calculations work

Four application wizards guide the set-up: level and pump control, open channel flow, differential level and tank volume. Each wizard asks only for the data that application needs, such as pump start and stop levels, the flume or weir type for a flow calculation, the two levels for a screen differential, or the tank geometry for volume. Any measured value can then be totalised, differenced, summed, averaged and logged.

In pump control the relays start and stop pumps or raise alarms from level, with the aim of preventing dry running and overflow. For analog outputs the controller drives the signal off scale on a fault, using either the Rosemount standard levels (21.75 mA high, 3.75 mA low) or NAMUR NE43 (22.5 mA high, 3.6 mA low). Output units cover level, volume and a wide list of flow rates from litres per second to mega gallons per day.

Where the Rosemount 3490 fits with other Rosemount parts

The usual pairing is the Rosemount 1208C level and flow transmitter, but radar transmitters such as the 3408 and 5408 or the older 5300 and 3300 can also feed it. It uses the same 4.3 in. display and similar input and output specifications as the Rosemount 2405 Monitoring Hub, which is the better choice when up to eight HART devices must be collected for tank inventory. For tank farm networks with many gauges, the Rosemount 2460 System Hub fills that role instead.

If you are replacing an older 3490 Series unit, send the nameplate details, because earlier 3490 designs used a different data sheet and may differ in inputs and wiring.

Selection checklist for the Rosemount 3490

  • Count the sensors and relays needed. Code A has one input and three relays; code C has two inputs and six relays.
  • Differential level, for example across a screen, is available only on code C.
  • Check that the transmitter signal is 4-20 mA or HART 5/7 and whether it is loop-powered by the controller.
  • Select the intrinsically safe sensor input option (KL) if a transmitter sits in a hazardous area.
  • Choose the wall and pipe kit and the weather cover for outdoor installation.
  • Note the Modbus TCP register needs of the host system or SCADA.

Installation, commissioning and maintenance of the Rosemount 3490

The polymer enclosure mounts to a wall or pipe through a 316L stainless support kit, and seven M20 entries take cable glands or NPT adapters. Terminals are spring loaded. Plan the transmitter loop with the load table: 2200 Ω maximum at 3.75 mA falling to 66 Ω at 22.5 mA, with at least 12 Vdc left at the transmitter. The sensor inputs are isolated at 1.75 kV from the other terminals, and the unit includes surge protection to IEC 61000-4-5 and burst protection to IEC 61000-4-4.

After the start-up period, run the wizard, test each relay with the pump circuit locked out, and check the analog output scaling against the PLC. Download the log through the web interface to confirm that recording works. Each new unit has a QR asset tag for retrieving device documents. Seven Star LLC can quote spare units so that a failed controller can be swapped quickly.

Typical applications of the Rosemount 3490 in Oman and the GCC

The controller suits intake and transfer pump stations, sewage lift stations, stormwater sumps, desalination plant chemical tanks, screen channels and open channels in municipal and industrial water systems. Its IP66/IP67 enclosure, wide temperature range and weather cover help in hot, dusty and humid sites, and the colour display stays legible in strong sunlight when shaded by the cover. Because it also accepts generic 4-20 mA signals, it is used as a local pump and alarm controller on industrial sumps and day tanks.

About brand

Rosemount is Emerson's brand for pressure, temperature, level and flow measurement, best known for the 3051 pressure transmitter. Frank Werner, Robert Keppel and Vernon Heath founded it in Minnesota in 1956 as Rosemount Engineering Company, first making temperature sensors for aerospace. It moved into the process industries, took the name Rosemount Inc. in 1966, and has been part of Emerson since 1976.

Seven Star LLC is an independent supplier in Muscat. We list Rosemount transmitters, level instruments, flowmeters and analytical sensors, and supply them and their spares to oil and gas, power, water and process plants in Oman and the GCC by model code.

Many Rosemount transmitters share one platform, so the model code tells you what you have. On a 3051, the letter after the number sets the type: C for coplanar (differential or gauge), T for in-line, L for liquid level and CF for a complete flowmeter. The next characters set the measurement type, the range code, the output (4-20 mA HART, FOUNDATION Fieldbus or WirelessHART) and the wetted materials. A transmitter with the wrong range code may work, but with poor accuracy at the point that matters.

Where Rosemount instruments are used

In Oman and the GCC, Rosemount instruments are used across upstream oil and gas, gas plants and LNG, refineries, tank farms and terminals, power and desalination stations, and water networks. Ultrasonic gas meters and tank gauges are used for fiscal and custody transfer measurement.

Ordering Rosemount instruments: what we need

Send the full model code from the nameplate (for example 3051CD2A22A1AM5B4) and the tag if it is a replacement. For a new instrument, send the measuring range, process connection, wetted materials, output protocol and hazardous area approval.
