Overview

The Gent Vigilon Compact Plus is a one or two loop analogue addressable fire alarm control panel from Honeywell Gent, built for buildings that need the intelligence of the Vigilon platform without the cabinet size of a large multi-loop network panel. Each loop circuit accepts up to 200 addressable devices, so a fully equipped two loop panel can supervise up to 400 sensors, call points, interfaces, sounders and visual alarm devices on a single, compact wall-mounted unit. The Gent Vigilon Compact Plus is designed to EN54-2 and EN54-4 and carries LPCB approval, which makes it a familiar specification item for consultants who work to British and European fire codes.

Working Principle

Vigilon is an analogue addressable system: every device on the loop has its own address and reports its status to the panel continuously, rather than simply switching a zone circuit into alarm. The loop processor card in the Gent Vigilon Compact Plus polls each sensor, receives its sensing data, and the panel software combines that information with the processing inside the S-Quad sensors to decide whether a real fire is present. Honeywell Gent describes this split processing as the way Vigilon identifies real fires quickly while reducing the false alarms that disrupt occupied buildings.

All Vigilon devices connect to the same two core loop of the Gent Vigilon Compact Plus, so sounders, visual alarms and interfaces do not need separate sounder circuits or repeater wiring. The loop is wired as a ring, so a single open circuit does not isolate devices, and short circuit isolators in the loop devices limit the effect of a cable fault. With approved 1.5 mm² cable a loop can run up to 2 km with up to 200 devices, and with 2.5 mm² cable the installation instructions allow up to 2.5 km, subject to the loop load calculation.

Engineering Design of the Gent Vigilon Compact Plus

The Gent Vigilon Compact Plus housing measures approximately 403 mm high, 338 mm wide and 101 mm deep and weighs about 8.6 kg without batteries, which makes it easy to mount in a corridor, reception area or electrical room. The panel is rated IP31 for indoor installation and operates from 0 °C to +45 °C. Card slot one carries the first loop processor card; slot two can take a second loop processor card and the optional network card. The network card links up to 31 panels in a secure copper loop network with up to 1.2 km between panels, so the compact panel can join larger Vigilon systems.

Operators of the Gent Vigilon Compact Plus work with a back-lit 8 line by 40 character LCD, dedicated LED indicators for fire, fault, disablement, test, delay and FARE status, and a keypad with access levels for users, customers and engineers. Two master alarm circuits, an auxiliary fire relay with two changeover sets and a fault relay are provided, and the relays can be reconfigured to operate on fire, fault or disablement with delays of up to ten minutes. RS232, RS485 and USB ports serve a printer, a repeat indicator panel and the PC commissioning tool.
