JUMO TYA S202 Three-Phase Thyristor Power Controller, 709066

Description

A cost-optimised three-phase burst-firing controller for heaters and furnaces

The JUMO TYA S202 (type 709066) is a thyristor power controller for resistive and resistive-inductive loads in a three-phase economy circuit. It uses a master and slave pair of units, where the master carries the display and keys and configures the slave over a 1:1 patch cable. The load is controlled by pulse groups, with a soft start to avoid high inrush currents and optional base load. For transformer loads, the phase angle of the first half-wave can be cut to reduce inrush current. The datasheet names industrial furnace construction and plastics processing as typical uses. Each controller has anti-parallel thyristors, an insulated heat sink, control electronics and a semiconductor fuse, and load currents run from 20 A to 250 A for AC 400, 460 or 500 V mains.

Selecting the rating and the circuit

Select the load current from the heater rating, with the power loss estimated by the empirical formula Pv = 2 x (20 W + 1.3 V x load current in A), which also sizes the cabinet ventilation. The maximum heat sink temperature is 110 °C, the current reduces above 105 °C and the controller switches off above 115 °C. Natural convection serves up to 200 A. At altitude the ampacity falls, and the datasheet gives 91.4 % at 2000 m. The economy circuit uses two controlled phases, so check that the three-phase heater suits this connection. The version with a PROFINET or RS422/485 interface suits integration with a PLC.

Installation and application notes

Mount vertically and connect the supply and load as shown in the type-specific diagram. Devices from 32 A use cable lugs on the load leads, and tightening torques range from 0.25 Nm for signal terminals to 12 Nm for the M8 load screws on 150 A and above. The device must be grounded and is built in for pollution degree 2 and overvoltage category III. Typical Gulf uses are electric heaters in process skids, heat-treatment ovens, extruders and plastic processing, where a burst-firing controller keeps harmonics low compared with phase-angle control. For fast-reacting loads or non-linear loads, other TYA types are the better fit.

See the power modules category for related items.

The display shows mains voltage with ±2.5 % accuracy and load current and load voltage with ±1 %, and the analog input is read with a 12-bit converter. Galvanic isolation separates the control circuits from the power section, with AC 3800 V between load connection and the electronics and AC 350 V between the interfaces and the analog inputs, and creepage distances are 8 mm on the 20 A type and 12.7 mm from 32 A. Master and slave are plugged together by default, so only the supply voltage and the load must be wired and parameterised on site.

Using the TYA S202 in Oman and the GCC

Three-phase thyristor controllers are used in the region for electric heaters in plastics processing, heat treatment furnaces, drying ovens, process water heaters and trace heating systems. Burst firing suits resistive heaters well and keeps harmonic distortion lower than phase angle control. The economy circuit with two controlled phases saves cost and panel space for balanced three-phase loads.

Thyristor controllers create heat, and panel temperature is often the limiting factor in summer. Size the panel ventilation or air conditioning for the heat loss of the controllers, keep the heat sinks clear of dust, and follow the derating curves in the operating manual. Semiconductor fuses must be used as specified to protect the thyristors.

Before ordering, compare the controller rating with the real load current, including the increase in heater current when elements are cold, and leave a margin. Where several heater zones run from one panel, the total heat loss of all thyristor units must be considered together when sizing the panel cooling.

Choosing a temperature sensor starts with the range and accuracy. A Pt100 RTD is accurate and stable from about -200 to 600 °C and is the usual choice in process plants. A thermocouple (type K or J, for example) covers much higher temperatures and responds faster but is less accurate. The wiring also matters: a 3-wire or 4-wire Pt100 connection cancels the resistance of the cable, while a 2-wire connection adds an error that grows with cable length. That is why a head-mounted transmitter is often fitted close to the sensor.

Where JUMO products are used
