How the BMXCPS2000 powers the rack

The module takes an AC primary of 100 to 240 V (limits 85 to 264 V) at 50/60 Hz and produces regulated supplies for the rack logic and I/O. The datasheet lists a secondary power of 10.8 W 24 V DC sensor power supply; 16.8 W 24 V DC I/O module power supply and processor; 8.3 W 3.3 V DC I/O module logic power supply.

Inrush is 30 A 120 V; 60 A 240 V at switch-on, so the upstream breaker must tolerate it. Protection includes Internal fuse not accessible primary circuit; Overload protection secondary circuit; Overvoltage protection secondary circuit; Short-circuit protection secondary circuit, and the datasheet lists an alarm relay output wired to a connector for monitoring.

Where the BMXCPS2000 fits in an X80 rack

The module mounts in the leftmost slot of the rack and feeds the processor and the I/O modules through the backplane. Check that it is compatible with the backplane type: the datasheet states Not compatible with BMEXBP..02. A processor such as BMXP342020 and an input module such as BMXDDI1602 are typical neighbours.

If the I/O population is large, add up the 3.3 V and 24 V loads of all modules against the module’s secondary current ratings before ordering, and consider a second rack with its own supply.

Selection and ordering checklist for the BMXCPS2000

  • Primary supply: 100 to 240 V AC only; confirm site voltage and frequency.
  • Sum the current of all modules in the rack against the secondary ratings.
  • Backplane compatibility as stated above.
  • Alarm relay wiring and reset behaviour.
  • Breaker and cable sizing for inrush.
  • Spare module holding for critical racks.

Installation, commissioning and maintenance of the BMXCPS2000

Mount the supply in the first slot of the rack, secure it and connect the line, protective earth and alarm relay at the connectors. The module weighs 0.3 kg and dissipates up to 8.5 W. Power the rack, verify that the rack-voltage and sensor-voltage LEDs are on, and test the alarm relay.

Maintenance involves checking the LEDs at routine rounds, keeping vents clear and dusting the rack. A supply is a common cause of unexplained rack resets, so verify AC quality when faults recur. Do not open the module; the primary fuse is internal and not accessible.

Typical applications of the BMXCPS2000 in Oman and the GCC

The BMXCPS2000 powers X80 racks in process utilities, water and wastewater, oil and gas and building plants across Oman and the GCC. Because supplies age with heat, a spare unit is a cheap insurance for racks that cannot be shut down.

Information to send with an RFQ for the BMXCPS2000

  • Full reference BMXCPS2000 and quantity

  • Number and type of modules in the rack
  • Site supply voltage
  • Delivery location and timing

Site conditions in Oman for the BMXCPS2000

Electrical rooms and outdoor panels in the Gulf often operate well above the 25 °C reference temperature used in many catalogues. Before you finalise the BMXCPS2000, compare the expected panel temperature with the operating range and any output derating stated in the manufacturer documentation, and leave the recommended clearance above and below the device for convection. Supply quality also varies between sites, so confirm the input voltage range, frequency and any requirements for protection on the supply side.

Where the device feeds or monitors critical loads, plan how faults will be signalled to the control system and how a replacement can be installed quickly. Keeping one spare BMXCPS2000 per site and recording its settings helps maintenance teams in Oman restore service with minimum downtime.

About brand

Schneider Electric is the French group for energy management and industrial automation: low and medium voltage switchgear and circuit breakers, motor control, drives, PLCs, power monitoring, UPS systems and building management. Its history goes back to 1836, when the brothers Adolphe and Eugène Schneider took over the iron and steel works at Le Creusot in Burgundy. Over the 20th century the company left steel and heavy engineering and became an electrical group through acquisitions such as Merlin Gerin, Télémécanique, Square D and Modicon. Its head office is in Rueil-Malmaison near Paris, and its shares are listed on Euronext Paris.

Milestones

  • 1836: The Schneider brothers acquire the Le Creusot works; the business grows in steel, locomotives and heavy engineering.
  • 1975: First investment in Merlin Gerin, a French maker of electrical distribution equipment.
  • 1988–1992: Télémécanique, Square D (USA) and Merlin Gerin join the group, making it an electrical specialist.
  • 1997: Modicon, the company behind the first programmable logic controller, joins the group.
  • 1999: The group takes the name Schneider Electric.
  • 2007 and 2014: APC (UPS and data centre power) and Invensys (process automation) are acquired.

Choosing Schneider Electric breakers and motor control

Circuit breakers are chosen by current and breaking capacity. Acti9 miniature circuit breakers (iC60, C120) protect final circuits up to 125 A. ComPacT NSX molded case breakers cover about 16 to 630 A, and the letter after the frame size sets the breaking capacity: B, F, N, H, S, L from lowest to highest. MasterPacT air circuit breakers are used as main incomers on large switchboards. For motors, a TeSys contactor with an LRD overload relay or a GV2 motor circuit breaker suits direct starting, an Altistart soft starter reduces starting current, and an Altivar drive controls speed. The breaking capacity must always be at least the prospective short-circuit current at the point of installation.

Where Schneider Electric products are used

In Oman and the GCC, Schneider Electric equipment is found in main and sub-main switchboards of commercial and residential buildings, motor control centres in water, oil and gas and industrial plants, substations protected by Sepam and Easergy relays, data centres powered by Galaxy and APC UPS systems, and buildings controlled by EcoStruxure Building Operation.

APC by Schneider Electric: UPS and critical power

Since 2007, APC has been part of Schneider Electric and is now its product brand for uninterruptible power supplies, replacement batteries, battery packs, network management cards and rack power distribution. Our APC catalogue covers Smart-UPS line-interactive and on-line models, Easy UPS On-Line, the modular Symmetra LX, RM and PX ranges, Silcon three-phase systems and their spare part kits, and the RBC cartridges that keep them running. Schneider Electric breakers, drives and PLCs can be quoted together with APC UPS systems in one request.
