The ABL8RPS24100 is a Schneider Electric product described in the datasheet as: universal power supply, Phaseo, 1 or 2 phase, 100 to 500 V, 24 V, 10 A. The ABL8RPS24100 is a Phaseo regulated switch-mode power supply that provides 24 V DC at 10 A (240 W) from a single-phase or two-phase input, for control panels. Seven Star LLC supplies the ABL8RPS24100 in Oman and the GCC as an independent supplier based in Muscat.

Decoding the reference: ABL8 is the Phaseo regulated universal power supply family, RPS24 indicates the 24 V DC output, and 100 the 10 A rating (datasheet title: universal power supply, Phaseo, 1 or 2 phase, 100 to 500 V, 24 V, 10 A). A neighbouring ABL8RPS24050 is the 5 A model of the same family.

How the ABL8RPS24100 converts and regulates power

A switch-mode supply rectifies the input, chops it at high frequency and regulates the output voltage. The ABL8RPS24100 accepts 100 to 120 V AC single phase N-L1; 200 to 500 V AC phase to phase L1-L2 and delivers 24 V DC at 10 A; the output voltage is adjustable over 24 to 28.8 V adjustable. The datasheet lists efficiency of 87 %, which defines the heat the supply adds to the panel.

Protection is against overload and the related faults listed under output protection in the datasheet; a short-term current capability of 1.5 x In for 4 s helps start capacitive loads and contactor coils.

Where the ABL8RPS24100 fits in a control panel

In a panel the ABL8RPS24100 feeds PLC power, I/O sensors, relays and indicators. It can be paralleled or series-coupled where the datasheet allows (Parallel; Series), for redundancy or higher voltage, with the precautions given in the manufacturer manual.

For controllers such as the Modicon M241 or X80 racks the supply must be sized for the total 24 V load, with 20 to 30 percent margin and attention to inrush current of loads when many contactor coils or fans switch together.

Selection and ordering checklist for the ABL8RPS24100

  • Total 24 V load current plus margin versus the 10 A rating.
  • Input voltage range: single-phase 100 to 120 V or 200 to 500 V as listed.
  • Thermal budget: efficiency and power dissipation heat the panel.
  • Output voltage adjustment needs for long cables with voltage drop.
  • DIN-rail space: 86 mm (W) x 125 mm (H) x 145 mm (D).
  • Redundancy needs: single supply or paralleled pair with decoupling.

Installation, commissioning and maintenance of the ABL8RPS24100

Mount the supply vertically on a 35 mm DIN rail with free air above and below as the manual requires, connect the input and output terminals with ferrules, and set the output voltage before connecting loads. The housing is 86 mm (W) x 125 mm (H) x 145 mm (D). Check the status LEDs after power-up; compare the LED states with the manual to identify an overload or output-voltage fault.

In summer panels the supply should be kept away from other heat sources and the derating notes in the datasheet applied above the normal ambient limit. Clean dust from the vents regularly and retighten terminals during planned outages.

Typical applications of the ABL8RPS24100 in Oman and the GCC

The supply is used in motor control centres, packaged skids, water and wastewater plants, desalination auxiliaries and process panels across Oman and the GCC wherever a wide-input 24 V DC source is required.

Site conditions in Oman for the ABL8RPS24100

Electrical rooms and outdoor panels in the Gulf often operate well above the 25 °C reference temperature used in many catalogues. Before you finalise the ABL8RPS24100, compare the expected panel temperature with the operating range and any output derating stated in the manufacturer documentation, and leave the recommended clearance above and below the device for convection. Supply quality also varies between sites, so confirm the input voltage range, frequency and any requirements for protection on the supply side.

Where the device feeds or monitors critical loads, plan how faults will be signalled to the control system and how a replacement can be installed quickly. Keeping one spare ABL8RPS24100 per site and recording its settings helps maintenance teams in Oman restore service with minimum downtime.

About brand

Schneider Electric is the French group for energy management and industrial automation: low and medium voltage switchgear and circuit breakers, motor control, drives, PLCs, power monitoring, UPS systems and building management. Its history goes back to 1836, when the brothers Adolphe and Eugène Schneider took over the iron and steel works at Le Creusot in Burgundy. Over the 20th century the company left steel and heavy engineering and became an electrical group through acquisitions such as Merlin Gerin, Télémécanique, Square D and Modicon. Its head office is in Rueil-Malmaison near Paris, and its shares are listed on Euronext Paris.

Milestones

  • 1836: The Schneider brothers acquire the Le Creusot works; the business grows in steel, locomotives and heavy engineering.
  • 1975: First investment in Merlin Gerin, a French maker of electrical distribution equipment.
  • 1988–1992: Télémécanique, Square D (USA) and Merlin Gerin join the group, making it an electrical specialist.
  • 1997: Modicon, the company behind the first programmable logic controller, joins the group.
  • 1999: The group takes the name Schneider Electric.
  • 2007 and 2014: APC (UPS and data centre power) and Invensys (process automation) are acquired.

Choosing Schneider Electric breakers and motor control

Circuit breakers are chosen by current and breaking capacity. Acti9 miniature circuit breakers (iC60, C120) protect final circuits up to 125 A. ComPacT NSX molded case breakers cover about 16 to 630 A, and the letter after the frame size sets the breaking capacity: B, F, N, H, S, L from lowest to highest. MasterPacT air circuit breakers are used as main incomers on large switchboards. For motors, a TeSys contactor with an LRD overload relay or a GV2 motor circuit breaker suits direct starting, an Altistart soft starter reduces starting current, and an Altivar drive controls speed. The breaking capacity must always be at least the prospective short-circuit current at the point of installation.

Where Schneider Electric products are used

In Oman and the GCC, Schneider Electric equipment is found in main and sub-main switchboards of commercial and residential buildings, motor control centres in water, oil and gas and industrial plants, substations protected by Sepam and Easergy relays, data centres powered by Galaxy and APC UPS systems, and buildings controlled by EcoStruxure Building Operation.

APC by Schneider Electric: UPS and critical power

Since 2007, APC has been part of Schneider Electric and is now its product brand for uninterruptible power supplies, replacement batteries, battery packs, network management cards and rack power distribution. Our APC catalogue covers Smart-UPS line-interactive and on-line models, Easy UPS On-Line, the modular Symmetra LX, RM and PX ranges, Silcon three-phase systems and their spare part kits, and the RBC cartridges that keep them running. Schneider Electric breakers, drives and PLCs can be quoted together with APC UPS systems in one request.
