JUMO TYA 201 Single-Phase Thyristor Power Controller

Description

Single-phase thyristor power controller from 20 A to 250 A

The JUMO TYA 201 (type 709061) is a single-phase thyristor power controller for electric heating, furnaces and other resistive or transformer loads. It is offered in seven load-current ratings of 20, 32, 50, 100, 150, 200 and 250 A and in eight mains voltage codes from 24 V to 500 V, so one family covers small heaters up to large process ovens.

The subordinate control can follow a voltage, current or power signal, and the interface choices include RS485/422, PROFINET, PROFIBUS-DP and EtherCAT through the mTRON system. Protection is IP20, and the data sheet states UL 508 file E223137. Weight rises from about 1.1 kg for the 20 A unit to about 10.2 kg for the 250 A unit.

Selecting the rating

Choose the load current from the heater power and mains voltage, and add margin for ambient temperature in the cabinet. As a derived example, a resistive load of 10 kW on 400 V draws about 25 A per phase, which points to the 32 A rating, subject to the derating curves in the data sheet.

The 250 A version needs forced cooling, so plan fan or air flow in the panel. The 20, 32 and 50 A versions can be mounted on a rail using the kit, while larger units are screw-mounted. Leave free space above and below the heat sink so that natural convection can carry the heat away.

Order the load current for the actual operating condition, not for the nameplate of the heater, because inrush of cold heating elements and high ambient temperatures reduce the usable current. Ask for the derating curve of your chosen rating when the cabinet is hot.

Interfaces and control

Fieldbus users can pick PROFIBUS-DP, PROFINET or EtherCAT, and the RS485/422 choice suits Modbus-type networks. Extra code 252 adds a relay and 257 an optocoupler output for signalling.

Fuse protection with semiconductor fuses is essential for thyristor units. Check fuse type, cooling and the control mode against the plant design before ordering.

Phase-angle and burst-firing operation behave differently on the mains: burst firing reduces harmonics but can cause flicker with large loads, while phase angle gives smooth power at the cost of reactive current. Discuss the local utility rules with the electrical designer.

Documents and quotation

Quote requests are handled from this page: attach your tag list or the full code, and note the load current, mains voltage code and cooling. The attached PDF (JUMO TYA 201 data sheet 709061 (EN)) is the reference for every value above, and it should be checked again for the final configuration. See also Power Modules.

About brand

Temperature measurement is the origin of JUMO, founded in 1948 in Fulda, Germany, as a maker of glass thermometers. Today the catalog covers sensors and transmitters for temperature, pressure, level and liquid analysis, plus controllers and recorders. Seven Star LLC lists JUMO RTD probes, pressure and differential pressure transmitters, pH, conductivity, turbidity and dissolved oxygen instruments, and sources them for plants in Oman.

JUMO product families listed

JUMO uses family names that recur across the catalog:

  • dTRANS: transmitters, including dTRANS T01 and T100 for temperature, dTRANS p02 DELTA for differential pressure, and dTRANS pH 02 and CR 02 for liquid analysis
  • Wtrans: wireless probes and transmitters, such as Wtrans T for RTD temperature and Wtrans p for pressure
  • digiLine and ecoLine: digital and optical analysis sensors, for example the digiLine O-DO S10 dissolved oxygen sensor and the ecoLine NTU turbidity sensor
  • NESOS: float-based level transmitters and switches
  • RTD temperature probes: screw-in types such as 902030 and mineral-insulated designs

Where JUMO sensors are used

JUMO sensors and transmitters are typical of food and beverage lines, water and wastewater treatment, pharmaceutical utilities, heating and cooling systems, and packaged machinery supplied to the GCC by European builders. Many requests are for a like-for-like replacement of a probe fitted by the machine maker, where length, thread and connector have to match exactly.

Ordering JUMO parts: what we need

JUMO identifies each product group by a six-digit type number, such as 902030, followed by an order code that fixes the options. The label of the delivered item normally carries a part number as well. Send whichever you have, ideally both, or a photo of the label. For JUMO temperature probes add insertion length, diameter, process connection, sensor type and wiring. For JUMO pressure sensors state range, output, process connection and electrical connector. For analysis sensors name the transmitter they connect to and the cable length.
