Brand:

AUMA SQ 14.2 Part-Turn Electric Actuator

Description

Overview

AUMA SQ 14.2 is the top of the SQ .2 range and the part-turn actuator AUMA offers when a valve needs 800 Nm to 2,400 Nm of tripping torque. Its standard flange is F14 with F16 available as an option, and the coupling takes valve shafts up to 60 mm. Beyond this size AUMA moves to part-turn gearboxes driven by multi-turn actuators, so the SQ 14.2 effectively defines the ceiling of the compact integrated approach.

Seven Star LLC, the official trusted supplier and regional supplier for AUMA, supplies the AUMA SQ 14.2 across the Sultanate of Oman and the wider GCC. Valves of this class appear on strategic assets such as intake structures and transmission headers, so we pay particular attention to torque data, flange drawings and installation access before confirming a quotation.

Where the Compact Range Ends

With a torque ceiling of 2,400 Nm, the AUMA SQ 14.2 handles the largest valves that a self-contained part-turn actuator can drive. Its operating times for 90 degrees at 50 Hz are 24, 36, 48, 72 and 100 seconds, noticeably slower than the smaller frames because a heavy valve is moved through a high-ratio worm gear. At the 24 s and 36 s ratios the maximum tripping torque is limited to 1,800 Nm, while 48 s and slower ratios give the full 2,400 Nm.

The minimum torque setting is 800 Nm, so valves with lower torque demands belong on smaller frames. Motor power runs from 0.06 kW on the slow ratios up to 0.19 kW on the fast one, and the drive remains self-locking at standstill. When a valve requires more than 2,400 Nm, the engineering route is to combine a multi-turn actuator with a part-turn gearbox, an arrangement that Seven Star LLC can also supply from the AUMA range.

Engineering Design of the AUMA SQ 14.2

The AUMA SQ 14.2 has the largest valve interface of the series: F14 standard, F16 optional, and shaft capacities of 60 mm cylindrical, 46 mm square and 46 mm two-flat. The 200 mm handwheel is the same size as on the 10.2 and 12.2, but it needs 51 or 70 turns for a 90 degree stroke, so manual emergency operation is deliberately slow and should be planned as a maintenance fallback, not a routine action.

Weight is about 44 kg for the standard unit and 55 kg with base and lever, the heaviest in the range, and a hoist or lifting eye is advisable during installation. IP68 and KS protection apply as with the other sizes, and the standard ambient range is -30 °C to +70 °C. AUMA’s DC motor data does not extend to this frame, so supply planning should assume a 3-phase or single-phase AC connection.

Key Features

The AUMA SQ 14.2 concentrates the range’s strongest mechanical capacity into one housing.

  • Tripping torque from 800 Nm to 2,400 Nm covers very large butterfly and ball valves.
  • Five operating times from 24 s to 100 s support surge-conscious closing on big pipelines.
  • An 1,800 Nm limit at the 24 s and 36 s ratios and 2,400 Nm from 48 s upward defines the speed-torque rule.
  • EN ISO 5211 F14 standard and F16 option flanges match large valve bodies.
  • Shaft capacity of up to 60 mm cylindrical avoids custom machining on large stems.
  • A 200 mm handwheel with 51 or 70 turns allows controlled manual movement at high gear reduction.
  • IP68 enclosure and KS corrosion protection suit coastal intake and outfall structures.
  • Fits AM and AC actuator controls, including SIL-capable and fieldbus options, for integrated automation.

Selection Guidance for the AUMA SQ 14.2

Selecting the AUMA SQ 14.2 is mainly about confirming that the largest compact actuator is genuinely required. If the valve torque exceeds 2,400 Nm, a gearbox combination is the correct route. If it sits comfortably inside 800 Nm to 2,400 Nm, the SQ 14.2 gives a single, integrated unit with a standard terminal compartment, which is simpler to wire and to maintain than a multi-turn actuator plus gearbox pair.

Because the handwheel needs 51 or 70 turns for a quarter turn, operators should not rely on it for emergency closure of a large pipeline. Plan a power supply strategy, such as a secondary feeder or UPS-backed controls, so that the electric drive remains the primary means of operation during a grid disturbance.

Industrial Applications

The AUMA SQ 14.2 is specified for the biggest quarter-turn valves in a plant: seawater intake butterfly valves at desalination and power stations, trunk main isolation valves in water transmission, and large cooling circuit valves in district cooling. Because strokes are slow, it is also used where regulatory or operational rules require a controlled closing time over a minute or more. Where a very fast trip is required on a valve this large, a fail-safe unit or a different valve concept is usually needed.

In Oman and the GCC, Seven Star LLC supplies the SQ 14.2 to Omani and GCC projects with local support. Engineers may want to benchmark it against smaller frames.

For lower torque duties consider the AUMA SQ 12.2 and AUMA SQ 10.2.

The wider family is described on the AUMA SQ part-turn actuator range page, gearbox solutions for even higher torque are available through the AUMA GS part-turn gearboxes, and integral controls are listed under the AUMA MATIC AM/AC integral actuator controls.

About brand
Electric actuators for industrial valves are the core of AUMA's business. Founded in 1964 and based in Müllheim, Germany, the company builds multi-turn, part-turn and linear actuators with matching gearboxes and actuator controls, in modular combinations that are fixed at the time of order. Seven Star LLC is an independent supplier listing AUMA actuators, gearboxes, fail-safe units and the SIMA2 master station for valve automation projects and replacements in Oman and the GCC.

AUMA actuator and gearbox types

SA multi-turn actuators handle open-close duty on gate and globe valves, and SAR is the modulating version; the listing includes the SA 07.2, SA 10.2 and SA 25.1. SAEx and SAREx are the explosion-proof equivalents. Part-turn duty on ball and butterfly valves is covered by SQ and the modulating SQR, or by an SA actuator combined with a GS part-turn gearbox. LE linear thrust units convert multi-turn output to thrust, and GHT multi-turn gearboxes extend the torque range up to 120,000 Nm. PROFOX is the compact actuator line. Special items include the seawater-resistant SGM and SGMR part-turn actuators with bronze housings, the SVC and SVCR globe valve actuators and the FQM fail-safe unit. Integral controls come as AM or AC versions.

Where AUMA electric actuators are used

AUMA actuators are found in water, power, oil and gas, marine and general industry. In practice that means isolation and control valves in water treatment and pumping stations, power plant steam and cooling systems, tank farms and pipelines, and sluice gates and dampers.
