Overview

AUMA GS 630.3 is AUMA’s largest part-turn worm gearbox, delivering up to 675,000 Nm of valve torque in open-close duty from a base unit that weighs 4.8 tonnes. It is the gearbox for the biggest valves in industrial infrastructure, such as hydropower intake gates, giant isolation butterfly valves and special closures, and it is supplied with a bronze worm wheel, a valve attachment in the AUMA-specific F90 pattern and an output coupling with a 100 mm pilot bore that can be machined up to 400 mm. At this scale, a gearbox is a project component, not a catalogue item, and every order is sized in consultation with AUMA.

Working Principle of the AUMA GS 630.3

The AUMA GS 630.3 is a worm gear with a bronze worm wheel in a cast iron GJL-250 housing, self-locking at standstill under normal service conditions. The swing angle is adjustable between 80 and 100 degrees and is set to 92 degrees at the factory, positive end stops with sensitive adjustment limit the movement, and a sealed pointer cover provides continuous position indication, with an air vent valve or venting keyways required for gas applications. Open-close duty is short-time duty S2-15 minutes or S2-30 minutes.

The direct ratio of 52:1 corresponds to a factor of 19.8 and 13 turns for 90 degrees, with a maximum input torque of 24,242 Nm at 480,000 Nm valve torque and 34,160 Nm at 675,000 Nm. Adding a GZ 630.3 planetary stage changes the picture: 4:1 gives 210:1 (factor 71.9, 6,676 Nm input), 8:1 gives 425:1, 16:1 gives 848:1 (261.2, 1,838 Nm), 32:1 gives 1,718:1 (528.8, 908 Nm), 64:1 gives 3,429:1 (951.2, 505 Nm) and 133:1 gives 6,939:1 (1,924.9, 249 Nm). Manual operation runs through a handwheel on the GZ primary reduction for input torques up to 400 Nm.

Engineering Design of the AUMA GS 630.3

Valve attachment is F90/AUMA with spigot as standard, and a plane version without spigot is an option; both dimensions are outside the EN ISO 5211 specification, so the valve builder uses AUMA drawing U3.2592. The output coupling has a 100 mm pilot bore with finish machining available up to a 400 mm bore and keyway, and the input shafts range from 120 mm on the direct ratio down to 30 or 40 mm on the highest ratios.

Weights are 4.8 tonnes for the direct gearbox, 5.3 tonnes with the 4:1 or 8:1 GZ stage, 5.5 tonnes with 16:1 and 32:1, and 5.6 tonnes with the 64:1 and 133:1 stages. Suitable multi-turn actuators range from the SA 48.1 on the direct ratio, SA 40.1 on 210:1 (on request), SA 35.1 on 425:1 and SA 30.1 on 848:1 down to SA 25.1 and SA 16.2 on the highest ratios, with permissible actuator weights from 1,400 kg down to 100 kg. Operating times at 50 Hz begin near 49 seconds for the direct ratio with an SA 48.1 at 16 rpm.

GZ 630.3 Primary Reduction Options for the AUMA GS 630.3

AUMA’s data sheet for the AUMA GS 630.3 lists the following combinations of worm gearbox and planetary primary reduction for the two valve torque ratings.

The two torque figures correspond to the 480,000 Nm and 675,000 Nm valve torque lines of the AUMA data sheet, which differ in the permissible input shaft diameter at each ratio.

Industrial Applications

The AUMA GS 630.3 serves valves that are custom-built: hydropower penstock and intake valves, giant butterfly valves on cooling-water lines, and large closures on seawater circuits for desalination and power stations. Few Gulf projects need this class of gearbox, but when they do, the long delivery chain and the heavy lifting plan make early coordination essential, and the choice between 210:1 and 6,939:1 changes the closing time from under a minute to well over twenty minutes.
