Brand:

AUMA SA 35.1 Multi-Turn Actuator

Description

Overview

AUMA SA 35.1 is an AUMA NORM multi-turn actuator for open-close duty with a tripping-torque window of 2,500 to 8,000 Nm and 10 output speeds from 4 to 90 rpm. SA 35.1 covers 2,500 to 8,000 Nm on an F35 flange and accepts a rising stem up to 155 mm. At 410 to 425 kg it is a unit that needs crane support at installation, and its speed range deliberately stops at 90 rpm.

The SA 35.1 is supplied by Seven Star LLC, a trusted AUMA supplier for Oman and the GCC, together with documentation and a regional contact for commissioning.

Operating Principle

The SA 35.1 counts motor turns for its end positions and trips on torque in each direction from 2,500 to 8,000 Nm. It is self-locking only up to 22 rpm, so faster versions depend on the valve to hold position. Duty is S2 – 15 min as standard and the starts limit is 30 per hour.

Engineering Design of the AUMA SA 35.1

AUMA also publishes separate data for brake-motor and hydraulic-steel-structure versions of the SA 25.1 to SA 40.1 group, which matter where a gate must be held against flow. Output speeds of 4 and 5.6 rpm are available as standard on this size, and the enclosure is IP67 with IP68 optional.

Key Features

Points to weigh when specifying the AUMA SA 35.1:

  • Heavy multi-turn actuator for large hydraulic structures and valves.
  • The tripping torque can be set anywhere between 2,500 and 8,000 Nm, an adjustment span of 3.2 to 1.
  • The S2 – 30 min rating of 5,700 Nm equals 71 percent of the maximum tripping torque.
  • Maximum torque per kilogram of mass is about 18.8 to 19.5 Nm/kg.
  • An illustrative stroke of 100 turns takes about 273 seconds at 22 rpm.
  • It sits above the SA 30.1 and below the SA 40.1 in torque class.
  • AUMA publishes dimension and electrical data sheets for this size separately.

Selecting the AUMA SA 35.1

The speed list of the AUMA SA 35.1 runs from 4 to 90 rpm, ten ratios instead of the twelve of the smaller sizes,. The starts-per-hour limit drops to 30. Torque is 8,000 Nm up to 45 rpm, 6,400 Nm at 63 rpm and 5,500 Nm at 90 rpm in S2-15 min duty. A particular selection point is self-locking: this size is self-locking only up to 22 rpm at 50 Hz, whereas the smaller SA sizes hold position up to 90 rpm, so valves that can be back-driven by flow must be matched to a slow speed or fitted with a brake.

Typical partners are very large gate valves, large radial and wedge sluice gates, penstocks, weir and lock gates, and multi-turn input for large worm or bevel gearboxes in combination with AUMA GK, GST or GS gearbox ranges.

Mounting a 410 to 425 kg actuator is a structural job. The valve manufacturer must confirm that the yoke, the stem and the bonnet flange can carry the weight of the AUMA SA 35.1 together with the reaction torque of up to 8,000 Nm, and often a separate support frame is welded to the valve body. Gate and sluice designers also check the stem for buckling when the thrust that the stem nut applies is high. Seven Star LLC can obtain the AUMA dimension sheet for the SA 25.1 to SA 48.1 range on request. Early agreement on the output drive type, the coupling dimensions and the position of the electrical connection avoids rework at site, where changing any of these on an actuator of this mass is expensive.

Sizing example for the AUMA SA 35.1

Consider an illustrative regulating gate that needs 5,200 Nm at breakaway and 3,000 Nm running. A 25 percent margin gives 6,500 Nm, which is inside the 2,500 to 8,000 Nm window of the AUMA SA 35.1. The full 8,000 Nm is available up to 45 rpm, but only 6,400 Nm at 63 rpm and 5,500 Nm at 90 rpm. A 100-turn stroke at 8 rpm takes about 750 seconds and at 22 rpm about 273 seconds; because the actuator is self-locking only up to 22 rpm the slower speeds are also the safer ones. These numbers are an illustrative calculation and not AUMA data.

Installation and Mounting of the AUMA SA 35.1

The 410 to 425 kg mass of the AUMA SA 35.1 needs a crane and a verified base frame. The F35 flange takes a rising stem up to 155 mm, and the 400 mm handwheel is relatively small for the torque, so manual operation at the upper end of the range is slow and demanding. Brake-motor versions documented by AUMA for the SA 25.1 to SA 40.1 group can be considered where a gate must be held against flow.

Industrial Applications

Seawater intake screens and gates at the largest desalination and power complexes, bulk-water storage inlets, and dam or flood-control gates are where the AUMA SA 35.1 is found. For Omani projects in Duqm and Sohar where heavy infrastructure is installed, delivery planning should include crane access, a base frame designed for roughly 0.4 tonnes of actuator weight and the handling route to the valve chamber.

Seven Star LLC, a trusted supplier of AUMA products for Oman and the GCC, can combine the SA 35.1 with the AUMA SA 07.2 multi-turn actuator, the AUMA SAR 14.1 multi-turn actuator and the AUMA SAEx explosion-proof actuator.

Neighbouring sizes and counterparts: AUMA SA 30.1 multi-turn actuator and AUMA SA 40.1 multi-turn actuator.

About brand
Electric actuators for industrial valves are the core of AUMA's business. Founded in 1964 and based in Müllheim, Germany, the company builds multi-turn, part-turn and linear actuators with matching gearboxes and actuator controls, in modular combinations that are fixed at the time of order. Seven Star LLC is an independent supplier listing AUMA actuators, gearboxes, fail-safe units and the SIMA2 master station for valve automation projects and replacements in Oman and the GCC.

AUMA actuator and gearbox types

SA multi-turn actuators handle open-close duty on gate and globe valves, and SAR is the modulating version; the listing includes the SA 07.2, SA 10.2 and SA 25.1. SAEx and SAREx are the explosion-proof equivalents. Part-turn duty on ball and butterfly valves is covered by SQ and the modulating SQR, or by an SA actuator combined with a GS part-turn gearbox. LE linear thrust units convert multi-turn output to thrust, and GHT multi-turn gearboxes extend the torque range up to 120,000 Nm. PROFOX is the compact actuator line. Special items include the seawater-resistant SGM and SGMR part-turn actuators with bronze housings, the SVC and SVCR globe valve actuators and the FQM fail-safe unit. Integral controls come as AM or AC versions.

Where AUMA electric actuators are used

AUMA actuators are found in water, power, oil and gas, marine and general industry. In practice that means isolation and control valves in water treatment and pumping stations, power plant steam and cooling systems, tank farms and pipelines, and sluice gates and dampers.

Ordering AUMA actuators and parts: what we need

  • valve type, required torque or thrust, and turns or stroke
  • valve mounting flange and stem or shaft details
  • output speed, duty (open-close or modulating)
  • supply voltage and frequency, control signals or fieldbus
  • enclosure protection, ambient temperature, Ex requirement
