AUMA SAEx 35.1 Explosion-Proof Multi-Turn Actuator

Description

Overview

AUMA SAEx 35.1 takes the Ex multi-turn range to 2,500–8,000 Nm (S2-15 min) as ninth frame, mounted on F35 with a 400 mm handwheel.

Seven Star LLC, as trusted AUMA supplier, provides the SAEx 35.1 across Oman and the GCC together with the documentation needed for an ATEX project file. Muscat engineers advise on lifting and installation for sites near Sohar and Salalah. See also: SAEx range, SAREx modulating Ex actuators and AUMA TIGRON TR-M explosion-proof multi-turn actuator.

Operating Principle of the AUMA SAEx 35.1

The SAEx 35.1 turns its output drive with a 3-phase squirrel-cage motor through a large reduction gear; end positions come from counter gears and torque switches guard both directions up to 8,000 Nm. Self-locking applies only up to 22 rpm at 50 Hz, so faster versions need the valve to hold position. AMExC or ACExC controls drive it.

Engineering Design of the AUMA SAEx 35.1

The SAEx 35.1 weighs 415 to 430 kg, so installation needs certified lifting equipment and a structurally verified valve support. Reduction ratios between 184 : 1 and 33 : 1 mean that manual operation by the 400 mm handwheel is slow, so many users add a power tool for emergency operation. Confirm the F35 flange, the 155 mm stem bore and the speed-dependent torque limit before ordering.

Wiring goes by direct terminal connection with motor terminals in a separate compartment. The standard enclosure is IP67 with IP68 optional, and the heater option is 12.5 to 25 W.

Key Features of the AUMA SAEx 35.1

What the SAEx 35.1 offers at a glance:

  • A torque window of 2,500–8,000 Nm (S2-15 min); the S2-30 min ceiling is 5,700 Nm.
  • Speed-dependent run torque between 2,800 Nm and 1,500 Nm at S2-15 min.
  • 30 starts per hour at output speeds of 4–90 rpm (50 Hz).
  • Approximate weight of 415 kg (4–22 rpm), 430 kg (32–90 rpm) and 400 mm handwheel.
  • Motor ratings of 4.0–30 kW (400 V) with 20–65 A nominal current.

Selecting the AUMA SAEx 35.1 for Your Valve

The SAEx 35.1 is a heavy-duty frame for 2,500 to 8,000 Nm tripping torque with an F35 flange and a 155 mm stem capacity. Its speed range stops at 90 rpm, and above 45 rpm the maximum torque is stepped down to 6,400 Nm at 63 rpm and 5,500 Nm at 90 rpm. The reduction ratios are very high (184 : 1 down to 33 : 1), which is why the handwheel is a 400 mm unit even though the actuator weighs 415 to 430 kg. Maximum starts are limited to 30 per hour, so this frame is an on-off isolation actuator, not a frequently cycled one.

Frame 35.1 handles 2,500 to 8,000 Nm on F35 with a 155 mm stem, but only 30 starts per hour. Valves that need up to 16,000 Nm are the territory of the SAEx 40.1 on F40, a 175 mm stem and 20 starts per hour.

AUMA SAEx 35.1 Torque and Speed Data

The following limits apply to the SAEx 35.1 at rated voltage and an ambient temperature of +40 °C. Illustrative calculation, not AUMA data: a valve needing 90 turns per stroke takes 1,350 s at 4 rpm, 245 s at 22 rpm and 60 s at 90 rpm.

Output speed, rpm Trip torque, S2-15 / S2-30 min, Nm Run torque, S2-15 / S2-30 min, Nm
4–11 8,000 / 5,700 2,800 / 1,400
16–22 8,000 / 5,700 2,400 / 1,200
32–45 8,000 / 5,700 2,000 / 1,000
63 6,400 / 4,500 2,000 / 1,000
90 5,500 / 3,800 1,500 / 750

Worked Sizing Example for the SAEx 35.1 (Illustrative Calculation)

For a main-line isolation valve with 6,100 Nm seating torque and 1,800 Nm running torque, the SAEx 35.1 offers 8,000 Nm for speeds up to 45 rpm and 2,000 Nm of run torque at 32 to 63 rpm. At 90 rpm the tripping torque is 5,500 Nm and the run torque 1,500 Nm, which would not cover this valve. The example shows why the 90 rpm variant is reserved for valves with much lower torque demand. This is an illustrative calculation, not AUMA data.

Explosion Protection and Installation Notes for the AUMA SAEx 35.1

Standard ATEX markings of the SAEx 35.1 per AUMA: II 2G Ex db eb IIB T4 or T3 Gb, II 2G Ex h IIB T4 or T3 Gb and II 2D Ex tb IIIC T130 °C or T190 °C Db. Certificate: TÜV 14 ATEX 7542 X. Confirm temperature class and zone on the nameplate.

At 415 to 430 kg, installation needs certified lifting equipment. The handwheel allows setting and emergency operation, and a power tool with square 30 mm or 50 mm drive is an option.

Industrial Applications

The AUMA SAEx 35.1 is used on very large isolation valves in major oil, gas and petrochemical installations. Typical positions include pipeline entry and exit valves, large storage-tank outlet valves and big cooling-water or feed-line valves in classified areas where up to 8,000 Nm is required.

Because of the 30-starts-per-hour limit and the 415 to 430 kg weight, this frame is normally specified for infrequently operated block valves. Seven Star LLC supports Omani EPC contractors with quotations, delivery planning and technical documentation for the SAEx 35.1.

About brand
Electric actuators for industrial valves are the core of AUMA's business. Founded in 1964 and based in Müllheim, Germany, the company builds multi-turn, part-turn and linear actuators with matching gearboxes and actuator controls, in modular combinations that are fixed at the time of order. Seven Star LLC is an independent supplier listing AUMA actuators, gearboxes, fail-safe units and the SIMA2 master station for valve automation projects and replacements in Oman and the GCC.

AUMA actuator and gearbox types

SA multi-turn actuators handle open-close duty on gate and globe valves, and SAR is the modulating version; the listing includes the SA 07.2, SA 10.2 and SA 25.1. SAEx and SAREx are the explosion-proof equivalents. Part-turn duty on ball and butterfly valves is covered by SQ and the modulating SQR, or by an SA actuator combined with a GS part-turn gearbox. LE linear thrust units convert multi-turn output to thrust, and GHT multi-turn gearboxes extend the torque range up to 120,000 Nm. PROFOX is the compact actuator line. Special items include the seawater-resistant SGM and SGMR part-turn actuators with bronze housings, the SVC and SVCR globe valve actuators and the FQM fail-safe unit. Integral controls come as AM or AC versions.

Where AUMA electric actuators are used

AUMA actuators are found in water, power, oil and gas, marine and general industry. In practice that means isolation and control valves in water treatment and pumping stations, power plant steam and cooling systems, tank farms and pipelines, and sluice gates and dampers.

Ordering AUMA actuators and parts: what we need

  • valve type, required torque or thrust, and turns or stroke
  • valve mounting flange and stem or shaft details
  • output speed, duty (open-close or modulating)
  • supply voltage and frequency, control signals or fieldbus
  • enclosure protection, ambient temperature, Ex requirement
