AUMA SAR 30.1 Modulating Multi-Turn Actuator

Description

Overview

AUMA SAR 30.1 is an AUMA NORM multi-turn actuator for modulating duty (class C, ISO 22153) with a tripping-torque window of 2,000 to 4,000 Nm and 4 output speeds from 4 to 11 rpm. SAR 30.1 is the largest modulating actuator of the AUMA SAR range. It delivers 2,000 to 4,000 Nm of tripping torque, 1,600 Nm of modulating torque at S4-25 percent, an F30 flange, a 115 mm stem bore and a 500 mm handwheel.

Customers in Oman and the GCC buy the SAR 30.1 from Seven Star LLC, a trusted supplier of AUMA products, and we confirm weight handling and the F30 interface with them before an order.

Operating Principle

With 2,000 to 4,000 Nm tripping torque, the SAR 30.1 is positioned in short pulses from an AM or AC positioner and holds position by self-locking. Modulating torque is 1,600 Nm (S4 – 25 percent), starts are limited to 300 per hour and the minimum pulse is 100 ms.

Engineering Design of the AUMA SAR 30.1

Modulating torque is 1,600 Nm (S4-25 percent) and 1,400 Nm (S4-50 percent). Standard enclosure protection is IP67 with IP68 optional, and modulating duty is not possible during immersion. The same installation points as the SA 30.1 apply: lifting equipment, structural support for about 190 kg and a separate motor terminal compartment.

Key Features

Points to weigh when specifying the AUMA SAR 30.1:

  • Largest modulating SAR actuator, 2,000 to 4,000 Nm.
  • Setting window of 2,000–4,000 Nm for OPEN and CLOSE separately, so the top value is 2.0 times the bottom value.
  • For S4 – 50 percent operation AUMA permits 2,800 Nm, or 70 percent of the maximum setting.
  • Relative to its mass, the maximum torque is about 21.1 Nm for every kilogram.
  • An illustrative stroke of 70 turns takes about 525 seconds at 8 rpm.
  • The SAR 25.1 is the next size down from here.
  • Outline dimensions and motor data are given in AUMA’s separate sheets for this size.

Selecting the AUMA SAR 30.1

The SAR 30.1 mirrors the SA 30.1 mechanically but adds the modulating rating. Output speed is limited to 4, 5.6, 8 and 11 rpm, the number of starts is 300 per hour, the pulse duration is at least 100 ms and the reversal pulse runs from 275 ms at 4 rpm to 130 ms at 11 rpm. The weight is approximately 190 kg. Because no larger SAR size is offered, loads above 4,000 Nm are handled by an AUMA gearbox combination or another actuator family.

Typical partners are very large control gates, heavy regulating valves in water works, level-control sluice gates, and large flow-control valves at power and desalination plants.

The AUMA SAR 30.1 is the end of the SAR range, and above 4,000 Nm AUMA offers solutions with gearboxes or other actuator families. For heavy regulating gates a SAR 30.1 combined with the right controls provides a very stable positioning loop because speeds are low and the gearing is self-locking. Typical commissioning involves a slow stroke over the whole travel to record the position transmitter calibration, followed by a torque trace to confirm that no stroke position exceeds the 1,600 Nm modulating limit at S4-25 percent. Plan one full-stroke run during commissioning with the controller in manual mode, log position feedback against time, and keep that record: it provides the reference stroke time against which later wear or fouling of the gate guides can be recognised.

Sizing example for the AUMA SAR 30.1

Take an illustrative level-control gate that needs 1,500 Nm running torque and 3,400 Nm at the seat. The running torque is under the 1,600 Nm modulating limit at S4-25 percent, and the seat torque lies within the 2,000 to 4,000 Nm window of the AUMA SAR 30.1. An 80-turn stroke at 8 rpm takes 600 seconds and at 11 rpm about 436 seconds, so a 1 percent change of position takes four to six seconds, which makes the actuator slow but accurate for level-control duty. These numbers are an illustrative calculation and not AUMA data.

Installation and Mounting of the AUMA SAR 30.1

At approximately 190 kg the AUMA SAR 30.1 needs crane lifting and a structural check of the valve yoke or gate frame. The F30 flange takes a stem up to 115 mm and the 500 mm handwheel needs wide swing clearance. The motor is wired through terminals in a separate compartment, so plan for heavy-gauge motor cable and a suitable cable gland size, and use the IP68 option where flooding of the gate chamber is possible.

Industrial Applications

The AUMA SAR 30.1 is most relevant to large utility projects: cooling-water flow control in power and desalination stations, bulk-water regulating gates at reservoirs and level-control structures in irrigation and wastewater networks. It is rarely held as a standard item in the region, so early project planning with Seven Star LLC secures a realistic delivery slot.

In Oman and the GCC, Seven Star LLC also supplies the AUMA SAR 14.1 multi-turn actuator, the AUMA MATIC AM/AC integral actuator controls and the AUMA SAREx explosion-proof modulating actuator.

About brand
Electric actuators for industrial valves are the core of AUMA's business. Founded in 1964 and based in Müllheim, Germany, the company builds multi-turn, part-turn and linear actuators with matching gearboxes and actuator controls, in modular combinations that are fixed at the time of order. Seven Star LLC is an independent supplier listing AUMA actuators, gearboxes, fail-safe units and the SIMA2 master station for valve automation projects and replacements in Oman and the GCC.

AUMA actuator and gearbox types

SA multi-turn actuators handle open-close duty on gate and globe valves, and SAR is the modulating version; the listing includes the SA 07.2, SA 10.2 and SA 25.1. SAEx and SAREx are the explosion-proof equivalents. Part-turn duty on ball and butterfly valves is covered by SQ and the modulating SQR, or by an SA actuator combined with a GS part-turn gearbox. LE linear thrust units convert multi-turn output to thrust, and GHT multi-turn gearboxes extend the torque range up to 120,000 Nm. PROFOX is the compact actuator line. Special items include the seawater-resistant SGM and SGMR part-turn actuators with bronze housings, the SVC and SVCR globe valve actuators and the FQM fail-safe unit. Integral controls come as AM or AC versions.

Where AUMA electric actuators are used

AUMA actuators are found in water, power, oil and gas, marine and general industry. In practice that means isolation and control valves in water treatment and pumping stations, power plant steam and cooling systems, tank farms and pipelines, and sluice gates and dampers.

Ordering AUMA actuators and parts: what we need

  • valve type, required torque or thrust, and turns or stroke
  • valve mounting flange and stem or shaft details
  • output speed, duty (open-close or modulating)
  • supply voltage and frequency, control signals or fieldbus
  • enclosure protection, ambient temperature, Ex requirement
