AUMA GS 63.3 Part-Turn Worm Gearbox (1,000 Nm)

Description

Overview

AUMA GS 63.3 is the second frame size in the GS part-turn worm gearbox series and the entry point for valves that need 1,000 Nm of output torque in open-close motor duty. It converts the multi-turn output of an AUMA SA actuator into a quarter-turn movement for butterfly valves, ball valves and plug valves, and it does so in a housing of only 12 kg. Compared with the 500 Nm GS 50.3 below it and the 2,000 Nm GS 80.3 above it, the AUMA GS 63.3 occupies the practical middle ground for mid-sized isolation valves in water and utility service, where a smaller gearbox would be overstressed and a larger one would simply add cost, weight and flange hardware.

In Oman and the GCC, Seven Star LLC supplies the AUMA GS 63.3 to contractors, utilities and plant owners in the Sultanate of Oman and the wider GCC. Our engineers check the valve torque, swing angle and actuator pairing against AUMA’s published data before a quotation leaves Muscat, so the gearbox you order arrives with the correct ratio, the right input flange and the manufacturer documentation.

Working Principle of the AUMA GS 63.3

Inside the AUMA GS 63.3 a worm shaft drives a worm wheel made of spheroidal cast iron. The worm wheel is the output element, and its splined coupling carries the valve stem through a quarter-turn swing of up to 90 degrees. The gearbox is self-locking at standstill under normal service conditions, so line pressure acting on a butterfly disc cannot back-drive the actuator. AUMA points out that strong vibration may cancel the self-locking effect and that safe braking while in motion is not guaranteed, so a separate brake is required where that matters.

Two ratios are offered. The 51:1 ratio needs 12.75 turns at the input shaft for a 90-degree swing, which gives a conversion factor of 16.7 and the fastest operating time of 7 seconds. The 82:1 ratio needs 20.5 turns, carries a factor of 17.0 and raises the fastest operating time to 11 seconds; it is limited to a valve torque of 750 Nm in duty class 1 because the toothing does not allow higher loads. Positive end stops, adjusted by a travelling nut, limit the swing in both directions, and the guaranteed end stop strength for input side operation is 450 Nm on the 51:1 ratio.

Engineering Design of the AUMA GS 63.3

The housing is cast iron (GJL-250) as standard with spheroidal cast iron as an option, and the output drive accepts valve flanges F10 and F12 according to EN ISO 5211 with a maximum shaft diameter of 50 mm. The input shaft is 20 mm with a parallel key to DIN 6885-1, and the input mounting flange is F07 or F10 depending on the multi-turn actuator, so an AUMA SA 07.2 or SA 10.2 can be flanged directly to the gearbox without a spacer. Mounting is possible in any position, which makes it easy to fit the gearbox to horizontal pipework or to a vertical valve shaft.

Enclosure protection is IP68 (8 m head of water as standard, IP68-20 as an option), the double-layer powder coating gives KS corrosion protection, and the temperature range runs from -40 to +80 degrees Celsius, with options for -60 to +60 and 0 to +120 degrees. A pointer cover shows the position continuously, a sealed pointer cover or a buried-service protection cover are options, and a lockable handwheel with WSH position signalling can be added for manual duty. In potentially explosive atmospheres the standard marking is II 2G Ex h IIC T4 Gb and II 2D Ex h IIIC T130 degrees Celsius Db, with mean constant output torques of 500 Nm (51:1) and 375 Nm (82:1) for the three-cycle ATEX duty.

Reduction Ratio and Input Data of the AUMA GS 63.3

The AUMA GS 63.3 appears in AUMA’s data sheet with the two reduction ratios shown below; both values are taken from the duty class 1 table for motor operation.

Ratio Factor Turns for 90° Input shaft Input flange Max. input torque Fastest 90° time Max. valve torque
51:1 16.7 12.75 20 mm F07 60 Nm 7 s 1,000 Nm
82:1 17.0 20.5 20 mm F10 44 Nm 11 s 750 Nm

Duty class 2, which applies to infrequently operated valves up to 1,000 cycles, raises the permissible valve torque to 1,250 Nm on the 51:1 ratio, while duty class 3 for manual operation to EN 1074-2 allows 1,500 Nm with a 90 Nm input torque and a handwheel of 250 or 315 mm.

Key Features

The AUMA GS 63.3 combines a compact worm gear set with the flange and shaft options that AUMA’s multi-turn actuators expect:

  • Maximum valve torque of 1,000 Nm in duty class 1, rising to 1,250 Nm in duty class 2 for rarely cycled valves.
  • Two reduction ratios, 51:1 and 82:1, with fastest 90-degree operating times of 7 and 11 seconds respectively.
  • Valve attachment to EN ISO 5211 flanges F10 and F12 with output shafts up to 50 mm diameter.
  • Input mounting flanges F07 and F10 for direct coupling to AUMA SA 07.2 and SA 10.2 multi-turn actuators.
  • Self-locking worm gearing that holds the valve at standstill without a separate brake in normal service.
  • Weight of only 12 kg including the unfinished coupling and grease filling.
  • Lifetime of 10,000 cycles at maximum torque in duty class 1, shared with the GS 50.3.
  • IP68 housing with KS corrosion protection and a standard ambient temperature range of -40 to +80 degrees Celsius.

Industrial Applications

Mid-sized butterfly valves on cooling water headers, desalination feed lines and municipal transmission mains are the natural home of the AUMA GS 63.3. A mid-sized butterfly valve at a pumping station near Muscat whose seating torque stays below 1,000 Nm can be driven through the AUMA GS 63.3 by a standard SA 07.2 or SA 10.2 actuator. Ball valves on fuel-gas skids, plug valves in chemical dosing rooms and dampers in air-handling ducts also fall into the same torque window, particularly where the 82:1 ratio is used to keep the actuator torque low.

In Oman and the GCC, Seven Star LLC supplies the AUMA GS 63.3 for projects in the Sohar and Salalah economic zones and for utilities across the GCC. See also the AUMA GS part-turn gearbox range for the full size range and the AUMA SA 10.2 multi-turn actuator that normally drives this gearbox. Buyers also frequently check the AUMA SA 07.2 multi-turn actuator.

About brand
Electric actuators for industrial valves are the core of AUMA's business. Founded in 1964 and based in Müllheim, Germany, the company builds multi-turn, part-turn and linear actuators with matching gearboxes and actuator controls, in modular combinations that are fixed at the time of order. Seven Star LLC is an independent supplier listing AUMA actuators, gearboxes, fail-safe units and the SIMA2 master station for valve automation projects and replacements in Oman and the GCC.

AUMA actuator and gearbox types

SA multi-turn actuators handle open-close duty on gate and globe valves, and SAR is the modulating version; the listing includes the SA 07.2, SA 10.2 and SA 25.1. SAEx and SAREx are the explosion-proof equivalents. Part-turn duty on ball and butterfly valves is covered by SQ and the modulating SQR, or by an SA actuator combined with a GS part-turn gearbox. LE linear thrust units convert multi-turn output to thrust, and GHT multi-turn gearboxes extend the torque range up to 120,000 Nm. PROFOX is the compact actuator line. Special items include the seawater-resistant SGM and SGMR part-turn actuators with bronze housings, the SVC and SVCR globe valve actuators and the FQM fail-safe unit. Integral controls come as AM or AC versions.

Where AUMA electric actuators are used

AUMA actuators are found in water, power, oil and gas, marine and general industry. In practice that means isolation and control valves in water treatment and pumping stations, power plant steam and cooling systems, tank farms and pipelines, and sluice gates and dampers.
