AUMA GHE Part-Turn Worm Gearbox (Manual)

Description

Overview

The AUMA GHE is a compact, manually operated part-turn worm gearbox for butterfly valves, ball valves and plug valves. It converts many turns of a handwheel into a controlled quarter-turn swing of the valve shaft, so one operator can open and close valves that need several hundred Newton-metres of torque. The range has four sizes, GHE 05.1, GHE 07.1, GHE 10.1 and GHE 12.1, with maximum output torques of 125 Nm, 250 Nm, 500 Nm and 1,000 Nm and a fixed 80:1 reduction ratio.

In Oman and the GCC, Seven Star LLC proudly supplies the AUMA GHE to customers across the Sultanate of Oman and the wider GCC. Our team can supply the gearbox with suitable couplings, handwheels and extension accessories for each valve.

Working Principle of the AUMA GHE

Inside the AUMA GHE, a worm shaft driven by the handwheel engages a worm wheel that is connected to the output coupling. The 80:1 reduction means roughly 20 handwheel turns move the valve through a 90 degree swing, while the handwheel input torque required is only a fraction of the output torque, for example about 5 Nm for 125 Nm at the valve. The worm gearing is self-locking, so the valve cannot be driven back by process forces and the position is held without a brake.

The swing angle is a fixed value between 82 and 98 degrees, factory-adjusted to 90 degrees unless another angle is stated, with mechanical end stops for open and closed. A mechanical position indicator provides continuous indication of the valve position, so operators can see at a glance whether the valve is open, closed or in an intermediate position. An optional multi-turn version without end stops is available with special AUMA sizing.

Engineering Design of the AUMA GHE

The AUMA GHE housing is made of spheroidal cast iron (GJS-500-7), with a bronze housing as an option for corrosion-critical use. The valve attachment is integrated into the housing according to EN ISO 5211 with flanges F07 and F10 for GHE 05.1 and GHE 07.1, F10 for GHE 10.1 and F12 for GHE 12.1; intermediate flanges allow F10, F12 and F14 variants. A splined coupling connects to the valve shaft and can be mounted in four 90 degree positions. It is supplied without bore as standard or machined with a bore and keyway, a square bore or a two-flat bore, and a bronze version is available.

Standard enclosure protection is IP67 with IP68 as an option, according to the AUMA definition of up to 8 m head of water for a maximum of 96 hours of continuous immersion. The ambient temperature range is −25 °C to +80 °C. The standard operating element is a polyamide handwheel; a version with ball handle and bronze operating elements according to VG 85081 are optional. Weights are low, from about 2.5 kg for GHE 05.1 to about 13 kg for GHE 12.1, which simplifies handling and installation of the AUMA GHE on site.

Key Features

The AUMA GHE provides dependable manual operation of quarter-turn valves:

  • Four sizes with maximum output torques of 125, 250, 500 and 1,000 Nm.
  • Fixed 80:1 worm gear ratio gives high torque multiplication with a low handwheel effort.
  • Self-locking design holds the valve position without additional brakes.
  • Continuous mechanical position indication shows the exact valve position at the gearbox.
  • Swing angle fixed between 82 and 98 degrees and set to 90 degrees at the factory.
  • Integrated EN ISO 5211 valve attachment with a splined coupling that can be mounted in 90 degree steps.
  • Spheroidal cast iron housing with optional bronze housing and coupling for aggressive environments.
  • IP67 enclosure as standard with an IP68 option for flooded pits and chambers.

Industrial Applications

Manually operated quarter-turn valves are everywhere in water and process infrastructure. The AUMA GHE is used on butterfly valves in water distribution networks and pump stations around Muscat, on ball and plug valves in industrial utilities at Sohar and Salalah, and on valves in chambers and pits where flooding is possible and IP68 protection is required. Because the gearbox is self-locking and has a position indicator, it is well suited to isolation valves that are operated infrequently but must be reliable when they are needed.

In Oman and the GCC, Seven Star LLC supplies the AUMA GHE with extension spindles, floor pedestals, chainwheels and other AUMA accessories for municipal utilities, contractors and industrial customers in Oman and the GCC. If a manually operated valve is later automated, the same family of AUMA part-turn actuators and gearboxes allows an easy upgrade path. When reviewing the AUMA GHE against the rest of the AUMA range, engineers often also look at the AUMA GS part-turn gearbox, the AUMA SQ part-turn actuator and the AUMA SGC-SGCR.

About brand
Electric actuators for industrial valves are the core of AUMA's business. Founded in 1964 and based in Müllheim, Germany, the company builds multi-turn, part-turn and linear actuators with matching gearboxes and actuator controls, in modular combinations that are fixed at the time of order. Seven Star LLC is an independent supplier listing AUMA actuators, gearboxes, fail-safe units and the SIMA2 master station for valve automation projects and replacements in Oman and the GCC.

AUMA actuator and gearbox types

SA multi-turn actuators handle open-close duty on gate and globe valves, and SAR is the modulating version; the listing includes the SA 07.2, SA 10.2 and SA 25.1. SAEx and SAREx are the explosion-proof equivalents. Part-turn duty on ball and butterfly valves is covered by SQ and the modulating SQR, or by an SA actuator combined with a GS part-turn gearbox. LE linear thrust units convert multi-turn output to thrust, and GHT multi-turn gearboxes extend the torque range up to 120,000 Nm. PROFOX is the compact actuator line. Special items include the seawater-resistant SGM and SGMR part-turn actuators with bronze housings, the SVC and SVCR globe valve actuators and the FQM fail-safe unit. Integral controls come as AM or AC versions.

Where AUMA electric actuators are used

AUMA actuators are found in water, power, oil and gas, marine and general industry. In practice that means isolation and control valves in water treatment and pumping stations, power plant steam and cooling systems, tank farms and pipelines, and sluice gates and dampers.

Ordering AUMA actuators and parts: what we need

For a replacement send photos of the actuator, motor and controls nameplates: type, order number, serial number and wiring diagram number. For a new actuator we need:
  • valve type, required torque or thrust, and turns or stroke
  • valve mounting flange and stem or shaft details
  • output speed, duty (open-close or modulating)
  • supply voltage and frequency, control signals or fieldbus
  • enclosure protection, ambient temperature, Ex requirement

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the AUMA GHE used for?
It is a manually operated part-turn worm gearbox for butterfly valves, ball valves and plug valves, converting handwheel turns into a 90 degree swing with a high torque multiplication of 80:1.
Is the AUMA GHE self-locking?
Yes. The worm gearing is self-locking, so process forces cannot back-drive the valve and the position is held without an additional brake. A mechanical indicator shows the valve position continuously.
Which output torques are covered?
The four sizes GHE 05.1, 07.1, 10.1 and 12.1 deliver maximum output torques of 125 Nm, 250 Nm, 500 Nm and 1,000 Nm, with EN ISO 5211 flanges F07 to F12 and optional intermediate flanges up to F14.
Can the AUMA GHE be used in flooded pits?
IP67 is standard, and IP68 is available as an option according to the AUMA definition of up to 8 m head of water for a maximum of 96 hours, which suits chambers and pits that may flood.
Is Seven Star LLC a trusted supplier for AUMA products?
Yes. Seven Star LLC supplies genuine AUMA products across Oman and the GCC and supplies genuine gearboxes, actuators and accessories with local technical support.
