Torque Limits and Speed Trade-Offs

The AUMA SQ 10.2 exposes a trade-off that engineers should understand before specifying the operating time. At the fastest 8 s stroke the maximum tripping torque is limited to 450 Nm, whereas from 11 s and slower the full 600 Nm becomes available. In other words, a valve that needs close to 600 Nm at the seat should be ordered with an 11 s or slower ratio, while a lighter, faster valve can use the 8 s option. The minimum setting remains 200 Nm throughout.

Seven operating times are offered at 50 Hz: 8, 11, 16, 22, 32, 42 and 63 seconds, corresponding to 6 to 50 seconds at 60 Hz. The motor power varies between 0.02 kW and 0.10 kW across these speeds, and the actuator is self-locking at standstill. Starts are limited to 60 per hour for the open-close duty class A and B defined in EN ISO 22153, with a short-time rating of S2 – 15 min at 35 % of maximum torque, so frequent modulation calls for the SQR version instead.

Engineering Design of the AUMA SQ 10.2

Valve attachment on the AUMA SQ 10.2 follows EN ISO 5211 with F10 as standard and F12 as an option. The coupling supports shafts up to 38 mm cylindrical, 30 mm square and 27 mm across flats. A 200 mm handwheel needs 11 or 15 turns for 90 degrees, giving enough leverage for emergency movement of a valve in the mid-hundreds of newton metres without excessive effort. The mechanical position indicator remains visible without power.

Weights are listed at about 26 kg for the standard unit and 31 kg with base and lever, and roughly 28 kg and 32 kg for the single-phase version. Sizing the AUMA SQ 10.2 starts with the highest torque demand across the valve life, not the as-new value. Butterfly valve seats stiffen with age, and torque can rise noticeably after years in untreated water. A specifier who selects a frame with torque headroom above the new-valve figure avoids premature tripping on the torque switches later. The 200 Nm to 600 Nm window gives room to do that for most mid-size valves.

Also decide the flange up front. F10 is standard and F12 is an option, so confirm which pattern the valve or its mounting bracket carries, and state the coupling bore and keyway in the order. A coupling supplied unbored must be machined on site, which adds time during a shutdown window that is usually tight.
