Brand:

AUMA SVM-SVMR Seawater-Resistant Globe Valve Actuator

Description

Overview

AUMA SVM-SVMR is AUMA’s seawater-resistant globe valve actuator range with integral controls, developed for the maritime industry. All housing components are made of bronze and all external screws of stainless steel, which gives complete resistance to seawater over long service periods, while the switchgear, power supply unit and DCS interface sit inside the actuator. The SVM version handles open-close and positioning duty and the SVMR version modulating duty, with torques from 10 Nm to 100 Nm. Unlike the AUMA SV and MEC, which uses a separate wall-mounted controls unit, the AUMA SVM-SVMR keeps everything in one housing.

In Oman and the GCC, Seven Star LLC supplies the AUMA SVM-SVMR to shipyards, marine contractors, offshore operators, ports and coastal industrial plants across the Sultanate of Oman and the GCC. Marine and naval projects usually come with approval, shock and documentation requirements that must be defined early, and our Muscat instrumentation team coordinates those requirements with AUMA before a quotation is issued.

Working Principle of the AUMA SVM-SVMR

The AUMA SVM-SVMR is driven by a brushless variable-speed motor with soft start and soft stop. The integral power electronics adjust speed in nine steps, from 3.2 to 22 rpm on the SVM/SVMR 05.1 and 07.1 and from 1.1 to 8 rpm on the 07.5, so the actuator can approach the seat gently and still move quickly through the free travel. Torque switching uses electronic current measurement with eight adjustable steps, and an excess-torque function can increase the set torque to 127 % for an adjustable time at start-up to unseat a blocked valve.

Limit switching uses a position transmitter potentiometer, and a mechanical position indicator shows the valve position continuously. The SVM operates in short-time duty S2-15 min for open-close service, and the SVMR in intermittent duty S4-40 % with up to 1,800 starts per hour as an option for modulating service. Control is via a four-input I/O interface with 0/4 to 20 mA set-point and position feedback, or via Profibus DP, Modbus RTU or Profinet, with programmable EMERGENCY behaviour that can stop the valve or send it to either end position.

Engineering Design of the AUMA SVM-SVMR

Three sizes cover the range: SVM/SVMR 05.1 for 10 to 25 Nm, SVM/SVMR 07.1 for 20 to 50 Nm and SVM/SVMR 07.5 for 40 to 100 Nm, with running torques of 13, 25 and 50 Nm. The valve attachment follows EN ISO 5211 F07 with an unbored coupling as standard and bored, square or two-flat couplings as options, and a handwheel or crank of 125 mm diameter is fitted for manual operation. Weights are about 11 kg, 19.5 kg and 19.5 kg for the bronze housing, or about 7.5 kg, 11 kg and 11 kg for the aluminium alternative.

The bronze version is intended for seawater service, and AUMA also offers an aluminium housing with a double-layer powder coating in category C5-M. Enclosure protection is IP68, with up to 8 m head of water, 96 hours of continuous immersion and ten operations while immersed. Shock resistance options include BV 0430 for surface vessels (180 g) and submarines (400 g), MIL-DTL-901D and 901E for the navy and EN 60068-2-27 up to 70 g, and vibration resistance follows MIL-STD-167-1A as well as IEC 60068-2-6. Type approval from Det Norske Veritas and Bureau Veritas is available as an option on specified versions.

Key Features

The following characteristics define the AUMA SVM-SVMR range:

  • A bronze housing with stainless steel external screws gives long-term resistance to seawater.
  • Integral controls with switchgear, power supply and DCS interface mean no separate controls unit is required.
  • Torque from 10 Nm to 100 Nm covers the small globe valves found in marine service and seawater systems.
  • A brushless variable-speed motor with soft start and nine speed steps gives gentle seating and fast travel.
  • Shock-resistance options from 70 g to naval MIL-DTL-901 standards and 400 g for submarine use fit military shipbuilding specifications.
  • DNV and Bureau Veritas type approval options support commercial classification requirements for specified versions.
  • Interface choices include I/O with 0/4 to 20 mA, Profibus DP, Modbus RTU and Profinet.
  • Local controls can be separated from the actuator on a wall bracket, and a handwheel or crank is available for manual operation.

Industrial Applications

The AUMA SVM-SVMR is applied to small globe valves on ships, naval craft and offshore platforms: seawater cooling, ballast and bilge systems, firefighting and washdown lines, and engine-room auxiliary services. Its bronze housing is equally suited to the seawater intake, outfall and pretreatment valves of coastal desalination and power plants, and to dockside and port installations where equipment stands in a salt-laden atmosphere year-round.

Oman’s port, shipyard and offshore activity at Salalah, Sohar and Duqm, together with its extensive coastal desalination programme, creates demand for such actuators. In Oman and the GCC, Seven Star LLC supplies the AUMA SVM-SVMR with support for selecting the shock, approval and bus options required, confirming whether the bronze or aluminium housing is appropriate, and arranging the correct plug/socket connectors and documentation. When reviewing the AUMA SVM-SVMR against the rest of the AUMA range, engineers often also look at the AUMA SV and MEC, the AUMA SGM-SGMR and the AUMA SVC-SVCR.

About brand
Electric actuators for industrial valves are the core of AUMA's business. Founded in 1964 and based in Müllheim, Germany, the company builds multi-turn, part-turn and linear actuators with matching gearboxes and actuator controls, in modular combinations that are fixed at the time of order. Seven Star LLC is an independent supplier listing AUMA actuators, gearboxes, fail-safe units and the SIMA2 master station for valve automation projects and replacements in Oman and the GCC.

AUMA actuator and gearbox types

SA multi-turn actuators handle open-close duty on gate and globe valves, and SAR is the modulating version; the listing includes the SA 07.2, SA 10.2 and SA 25.1. SAEx and SAREx are the explosion-proof equivalents. Part-turn duty on ball and butterfly valves is covered by SQ and the modulating SQR, or by an SA actuator combined with a GS part-turn gearbox. LE linear thrust units convert multi-turn output to thrust, and GHT multi-turn gearboxes extend the torque range up to 120,000 Nm. PROFOX is the compact actuator line. Special items include the seawater-resistant SGM and SGMR part-turn actuators with bronze housings, the SVC and SVCR globe valve actuators and the FQM fail-safe unit. Integral controls come as AM or AC versions.

Where AUMA electric actuators are used

AUMA actuators are found in water, power, oil and gas, marine and general industry. In practice that means isolation and control valves in water treatment and pumping stations, power plant steam and cooling systems, tank farms and pipelines, and sluice gates and dampers.
