AUMA SA-UW Underwater Multi-Turn Actuator
Overview
AUMA SA-UW is the multi-turn actuator range that AUMA Riester builds for valves that live underwater for good: sluice and penstock gates on dams, intake gates on tidal structures, valves in flooded chambers, and subsea or seabed installations where a conventional IP67 actuator would fail within weeks. Based on the proven SA modular platform, the AUMA SA-UW covers torques from 10 Nm up to 4,000 Nm and is designed for open-close duty, giving engineers a single, standardised underwater actuator family instead of a patchwork of one-off sealed housings.
In Oman and the GCC, Seven Star LLC supplies the AUMA SA-UW to utilities, desalination operators, marine contractors and port authorities across the Sultanate of Oman and the wider GCC. Every unit is supplied with the correct cable set and wall-bracket controls documentation, and local engineering support from our Muscat team – important when a submerged actuator cannot be reached for repair without a diving or dewatering operation.
Working Principle of the AUMA SA-UW
The AUMA SA-UW converts the rotation of a 3-phase AC asynchronous motor into controlled multi-turn output through a self-locking worm gear stage, driving the valve stem or a gearbox through the standard output drive. What differs from a surface actuator is everything that keeps water out: the terminal compartment is sealed a second time against the actuator interior, the electrical connection uses double-sealed cable glands, the housing covers carry inner seals (some in pairs) and the output shaft is solid stainless steel. Water that reaches the cable entry therefore never reaches the electronics or the motor.
Because an immersed actuator cannot carry bulky switchgear, the AUMA SA-UW keeps its intelligence dry. Limit and torque sensing is handled by AUMA’s magnetic limit and torque transmitter (MWG), which is non-intrusive and needs no mechanical switch stack, while the AC actuator controls are mounted on a wall bracket outside the water and linked by a dedicated cable set. The practical consequence is a compact submersible drive with proven AUMA tripping-torque protection, position feedback and fault signalling routed through the dry-side controls.
Engineering Design of the AUMA SA-UW
The AUMA SA-UW is offered in the sizes SA 07.2-UW, 07.6-UW, 10.2-UW, 14.2-UW, 14.6-UW and 16.2-UW, plus the large frame sizes SA 25.1-UW and SA 30.1-UW, with output speeds from 4 to 180 rpm at 50 Hz. Valve attachments follow EN ISO 5210 (F07 up to F30) with DIN 3210 as an option, and output drive type B1 is standard. Enclosure protection is IP68-C15, tested for a maximum head of water of 15 m, with IP68-C60 for 60 m available as an option.
Corrosion protection is class KX-G, an aluminium-free version of the outer parts with a two-layer powder coating and additional wet painting. AUMA qualifies this finish for freshwater (Im1), seawater (Im2) and seafloor (Im3) service, which is why the AUMA SA-UW suits Gulf and Arabian Sea conditions. The ambient range is –30 °C to +70 °C, mounting position is unrestricted, and a handwheel for setting and emergency operation can be specified for installations that remain accessible.
Key Features
The following characteristics make the AUMA SA-UW a dependable choice for continuous underwater open-close duty:
- Continuous underwater operation is rated to IP68-C15 as standard, with a 60 m head-of-water option for deep installations.
- Double-sealed cable glands and a second seal between terminal compartment and actuator interior stop water travelling along the cable.
- Solid stainless steel output shaft and inner cover seals, sometimes arranged in pairs, protect the gear housing from ingress.
- The magnetic limit and torque transmitter provides non-intrusive, wear-free end-position and torque detection.
- Torque range of 10 Nm to 4,000 Nm covers small penstock gates through to heavy sluice gates and large flow-control valves.
- KX-G corrosion protection with aluminium-free outer parts is qualified for fresh water, seawater and seafloor conditions.
- Standard short-time duty S2-15 min, with an S2-30 min option, in classes A and B according to EN ISO 22153.
- Wall-bracket AC actuator controls keep switchgear dry and provide fieldbus-capable integration with the plant control system.
Industrial Applications
The AUMA SA-UW is the natural choice wherever a valve sits below the waterline permanently: seawater intake and outfall structures for desalination and power plants, cooling-water culverts, dam and weir outlets, sluice gates in wadi flood-control schemes, flooded valve pits in water transmission networks and stormwater pumping stations. In Oman the coastal desalination clusters around Sohar, Barka and Salalah, and the port and industrial zones at Duqm and Salalah, all include submerged or splash-zone valves that benefit from an actuator specified for immersion from day one.
In Oman and the GCC, Seven Star LLC supplies the AUMA SA-UW with complete selection support: we match the actuator size to the valve torque and duty, specify the correct cable set length, controls and head-of-water option, and coordinate documentation with EPC contractors in Muscat and the GCC. Where the application requires modulating duty, our team will direct you to the sister range, the AUMA SAR-UW. For projects that combine the AUMA SA-UW with other drives or controls, Seven Star LLC also supplies the AUMA SAR-UW, the AUMA SA 10.2 multi-turn actuator and the AUMA MATIC AM/AC integral actuator controls.

AUMA actuator and gearbox types
SA multi-turn actuators handle open-close duty on gate and globe valves, and SAR is the modulating version; the listing includes the SA 07.2, SA 10.2 and SA 25.1. SAEx and SAREx are the explosion-proof equivalents. Part-turn duty on ball and butterfly valves is covered by SQ and the modulating SQR, or by an SA actuator combined with a GS part-turn gearbox. LE linear thrust units convert multi-turn output to thrust, and GHT multi-turn gearboxes extend the torque range up to 120,000 Nm. PROFOX is the compact actuator line. Special items include the seawater-resistant SGM and SGMR part-turn actuators with bronze housings, the SVC and SVCR globe valve actuators and the FQM fail-safe unit. Integral controls come as AM or AC versions.Where AUMA electric actuators are used
