AUMA PROFOX-MX Explosion-Proof Multi-Turn Actuator
Overview
AUMA PROFOX-MX is the explosion-proof version of the compact PROFOX-M multi-turn actuator from AUMA Riester GmbH & Co. KG. It is built for plants where a potentially explosive atmosphere can occur and carries the ATEX marking II 2G Ex db h IIC T4 as well as the international IECEx marking Ex db h IIC T4. The torque range of 10 Nm to 100 Nm and the output speeds of 0.5 to 14 rpm given in the AUMA PROFOX brochure are the same as for the standard PROFOX-M, and the actuator is rated for open-close duty and modulating duty. Operators of refineries, gas plants and chemical facilities can therefore use one platform for the smaller valves inside hazardous areas without giving up modern diagnostics.
In Oman and the GCC, Seven Star LLC proudly supplies the AUMA PROFOX-MX to oil and gas, petrochemical and process customers throughout the Sultanate of Oman and the GCC, together with genuine factory documentation, certificates, warranty support and local technical assistance from Muscat.
Explosion Protection Principle of the AUMA PROFOX-MX
Explosion-proof devices must be used wherever potentially explosive atmospheres are likely to occur, and they are designed so that they do not act as an ignition source. The AUMA PROFOX-MX neither generates ignition sparks nor reaches hot surface temperatures that could ignite the surrounding gas. The marking Ex db designates flameproof enclosure: the housing withstands the pressure of an internal explosion and prevents it from spreading to the outside atmosphere. The additional mark h refers to the non-electrical equipment requirements, and IIC identifies suitability for the gas group with the most demanding ignition characteristics.
Temperature class T4 limits the surface temperature of the equipment to a value below the ignition temperature of the gases it is approved for, which is an essential planning parameter in hot climates. For the AUMA PROFOX-MX the permitted ambient temperature range is -30 °C to +60 °C. Certification is carried out by AUMA in close collaboration with national and international certification bodies, so project teams receive documentation that is accepted by authorities and insurers in the region.
Engineering Design of the AUMA PROFOX-MX
The AUMA PROFOX-MX inherits the rugged metal housing, enclosure protection IP67/IP68 and corrosion protection class C5-M/C5-I of the PROFOX family. Its operating scheme is identical to the standard variant: end positions are set with push buttons or with the AUMA Assistant App, limit and torque sensing protect the valve, and a manual drive allows manual operation. A mechanical position indicator is available for the setting ranges 1–9, 9–14 and 14–27 turns per stroke.
The wide-range power supply unit and the variable speed drive of the PROFOX platform are also used in the explosion-proof model. Variable speed provides premium control accuracy for modulating valves and a gentle approach to the end positions, while the centrally located FOX-EYE LED shows the state of actuator and valve even from a distance. Electrical interfaces comprise a position transmitter as well as Profibus, Modbus and Profinet, so the AUMA PROFOX-MX can be connected to the same DCS architecture as its non-hazardous counterpart.
Key Features
The following points summarise why the AUMA PROFOX-MX is selected for hazardous area valve automation:
- ATEX certification II 2G Ex db h IIC T4 and IECEx certification Ex db h IIC T4 for use in potentially explosive atmospheres.
- Compact multi-turn design covering 10 Nm to 100 Nm with output speeds from 0.5 to 14 rpm.
- Open-close and modulating duty, so on/off and control valves in hazardous areas can use the same actuator type.
- Variable speed operation for accurate positioning and gentle approach to the end positions.
- FOX-EYE indication LED that displays actuator and valve status, with a display scheme configurable by the user.
- Commissioning through push buttons or through the AUMA Assistant App, with actuator and valve diagnostics supporting predictive maintenance.
- Low standby consumption and easy installation with intuitive commissioning.
- Rugged metal housing, IP67/IP68 enclosure protection and C5-M/C5-I corrosion protection for harsh outdoor sites.
Industrial Applications
The AUMA PROFOX-MX is suited to small and medium gate and globe valves in hazardous areas: wellhead and gathering systems, gas treatment and metering skids, fuel and condensate handling, chemical dosing units, and process units in petrochemical and refining complexes. In Oman these conditions are found at the oil and gas fields of the interior, in the industrial and port zones of Sohar and Duqm and in the Salalah free zone, where coastal humidity adds a corrosion load to the explosion-protection requirement.
In Oman and the GCC, Seven Star LLC supplies the AUMA PROFOX-MX with the matching accessories and supports engineering contractors and operators in Muscat and across the GCC with selection, verification of the certification marking against the area classification, and spare parts planning. Customers who also run non-hazardous areas can combine the PROFOX-MX with the standard AUMA PROFOX-M to keep operation, commissioning and documentation uniform across the plant. When reviewing the AUMA PROFOX-MX against the rest of the AUMA range, engineers often also look at the AUMA PROFOX-M, the AUMA PROFOX-QX and the AUMA SAEx explosion-proof actuator.

AUMA actuator and gearbox types
SA multi-turn actuators handle open-close duty on gate and globe valves, and SAR is the modulating version; the listing includes the SA 07.2, SA 10.2 and SA 25.1. SAEx and SAREx are the explosion-proof equivalents. Part-turn duty on ball and butterfly valves is covered by SQ and the modulating SQR, or by an SA actuator combined with a GS part-turn gearbox. LE linear thrust units convert multi-turn output to thrust, and GHT multi-turn gearboxes extend the torque range up to 120,000 Nm. PROFOX is the compact actuator line. Special items include the seawater-resistant SGM and SGMR part-turn actuators with bronze housings, the SVC and SVCR globe valve actuators and the FQM fail-safe unit. Integral controls come as AM or AC versions.Where AUMA electric actuators are used
AUMA actuators are found in water, power, oil and gas, marine and general industry. In practice that means isolation and control valves in water treatment and pumping stations, power plant steam and cooling systems, tank farms and pipelines, and sluice gates and dampers.Ordering AUMA actuators and parts: what we need
For a replacement send photos of the actuator, motor and controls nameplates: type, order number, serial number and wiring diagram number. For a new actuator we need:- valve type, required torque or thrust, and turns or stroke
