AUMA SGM-SGMR Seawater-Resistant Part-Turn Actuator
Overview
The AUMA SGM-SGMR is the bronze-housed sibling of the SGC-SGCR: a “small” electric part-turn actuator range with integral controls, and a torque range from 25 Nm to 2,200 Nm. All housing components are made of bronze and all external screws are stainless steel, which AUMA states ensures complete resistance against seawater even over a longer time period. The SGM actuators are designed for open-close and positioning duty (classes A and B, short-time duty S2 – 15 min), the SGMR actuators for modulating duty (class C) S4 – 40 %. All parameters are set directly at the actuator, and the integral controls contain the switchgear, the power supply unit and the interface to the DCS.
In Oman and the GCC, Seven Star LLC proudly supplies the AUMA SGM-SGMR to shipbuilders, offshore operators, desalination plants and coastal industry in the Sultanate of Oman and across the GCC. For vessels, ports and plants along the Sea of Oman and the Arabian Sea, salt-laden air and direct seawater contact make material choice the deciding factor in service life, and the SGM-SGMR gives such sites a bronze actuator built for that environment with the convenience of integral controls.
Operating Principle
The AUMA SGM-SGMR drives the valve with a brushless, variable-speed motor through a compact gear stage. The operating time for 90 degrees can be set between 4 s and 90 s, and the swing angle is 82 to 98 degrees. Limit and torque seating are monitored inside the actuator, and a handwheel provides manual operation. AUMA describes internal speed control that protects the mechanics of both actuator and valve, and soft starts and stops that act gently on all mechanical components, which is important when a fast stroke is required but pressure surges and mechanical shock must be avoided.
The integral controls automatically switch the actuator off once the valve end position is reached, motor overheating is detected or a torque overload has occurred. Position feedback is available as a 4 – 20 mA signal or through a fieldbus interface, so the AUMA SGM-SGMR can be integrated into a conventional hard-wired system or into a networked control system. The SGMR version is sized for modulating duty at S4 – 40 %, so it can follow a setpoint continuously as a control valve actuator.
Engineering Design of the AUMA SGM-SGMR
AUMA’s marine documentation explains the benefits of the bronze housing: bronze is antimagnetic, which can be crucial for vessels that must avoid magnetic signature, it is non-combustible, it has a higher melting point than aluminium and actuators with bronze housings are seawater-resistant and do not require additional coating. The same documents describe five shock grades, including classification for submarines at 400 g and certification according to MIL-S-901D (NAVY). Always confirm the available shock grade for the project, because it is configured to the application. The AUMA SGM-SGMR product page lists high shock resistance among its service conditions.
Enclosure protection is IP68 and the ambient temperature range is −25 °C to +70 °C. The interface package comprises control inputs for different voltages (DC and AC), potential-free output contacts for status signalling and a fieldbus interface. Local controls can be installed separately from the actuator. The dimension sheets cover SGM and SGMR 04.1 to 10.1 (together with the SVM globe valve actuators of the same design) and SGM and SGMR 12.1 to 14.1, and electrical data sheets include versions for 115 V and 230 V AC controls and for 220 V DC motors.
Key Features
The AUMA SGM-SGMR is designed for corrosion-prone, shock-exposed environments. Its principal features are the following.
- Bronze housing and stainless steel external screws for complete seawater resistance without additional coating.
- Torque range of 25 Nm to 2,200 Nm with operating times for 90 degrees of 4 s to 90 s.
- SGM for open-close and positioning duty (classes A and B, S2 – 15 min) and SGMR for modulating duty, class C, S4 – 40 %.
- Integral controls with switchgear, power supply and DCS interface, set directly at the actuator.
- Brushless, variable-speed motor with limit and torque seating and a swing angle of 82 to 98 degrees.
- Position feedback of 4 – 20 mA or via fieldbus, with control inputs for different voltages (DC/AC).
- High shock resistance, with shock grades and military certification available according to project requirements.
- IP68 enclosure protection, handwheel for manual operation and optional separate local controls.
Industrial Applications
The AUMA SGM-SGMR is used wherever a valve actuator meets seawater or marine conditions: ship systems such as seawater cooling, ballast and fire-fighting circuits, naval and commercial vessels, offshore platforms, jetties and port facilities, and desalination and power plant intake and outfall systems. The antimagnetic, non-combustible and corrosion-resistant bronze housing also suits environments such as submarines and warships where those properties are specified, and the shock resistance is relevant wherever vibration or impact loads occur. Land-based users benefit from the same corrosion resistance in salt-laden coastal air.
In Oman and the GCC, Seven Star LLC distributes the AUMA SGM-SGMR for projects in the Sultanate of Oman and the GCC, including ports and shipyards at Sohar, Salalah and Duqm and coastal facilities around Muscat. For projects where separate controls are required, we can propose the AUMA SG2+MEC, and for weight-sensitive land installations the aluminium AUMA SGC-SGCR, so that each valve receives the actuator that suits its environment.

About AUMA: Company and Product Range
AUMA was founded in 1964 in Nellingen, near Stuttgart, Germany, by Werner Riester and Rudolf Dinse. The name stands for 'Armaturen- Und Maschinen Antriebe', meaning drives for valves and machines. In 1971 the company moved to Müllheim in southern Germany, which is still its headquarters. AUMA Riester GmbH & Co. KG has three production sites in Germany and further production units in India, the USA and China.
AUMA makes electric actuators and gearboxes for industrial valves. The range listed here includes SA multi-turn and SQ part-turn actuators with their modulating (SAR, SQR) and explosion-proof (SAEx, SAREx) versions, GS and GHT gearboxes, LE linear thrust units, compact PROFOX actuators, fail-safe units and the SIMA2 master station. They are used in water, power, oil and gas and general process plants.
